Apparently 'omnishambles' has just been voted 'word of the year' by the OED, beating such contenders as 'mummy porn' and 'green-on-blue'. Perhaps fortunately, none of these will ever appear in Chi games.

The story is at bbc.com/news/uk-politics-20309441

So, since my dictionary sources don't have it, what does it mean?

Well, you could read the story and find out, but to save you the trouble, it's a word that was coined by the BBC's political satire 'The Thick of It' to describe the totally chaotic mess that our politicians have got us into (omni= all, shambles - a mess). apparently the word has caught the popular imagination and is now in widespread use.
Incidentally, I've only seen a couple of episodes of 'The Thick of It', but oh my! What a load of shits they all are - they make all those awful people on 'Mad Men' seem quite nice.

I read the article and can only be grateful that "medal" as a verb, ie "to medal" fell by the wayside ...

I'd heard on the news that "omnishambles" was the Word of the Year.  I don't know that it's crossed the pond yet - I had never heard it.

Omnishambles hasn't reached remote New Zealand either. Have you heard it in Seffrica GC?

As far as I can tell, this has not yet made its way to the US.  I hope it does.  This describes the legislative branch of our government all too accurately.

Amen!!!!

They did, despite all efforts to the contrary, manage to pass legislation during the "eleventh hour" of New Year's Day to avoid the so-called "Fiscal Cliff" which has been trumpeted for many a week now!!!
