Should this really be a common word? I don't think it's used in the UK.

Have to agree; I played the word, but it was a guess; the COD quite clearly shows it as 'N. American'. I think in general any word or phrase which uses 'lot' in this way (parking lot, building lot) tends to be N. American. I don't know what we'd call it in UK - a sandpit perhaps?

I've only heard it used in connection with amateur baseball, so I could see that it wouldn't be used outside the US and maybe Japan.  Do any other countries have baseball teams?
