Yes, it's confusing isn't it!  Most of my posts on this forum are about plurals.  In this case, I suspect the word is used in the context of 'having the hots' for someone (i.e. being attracted to them).  It's not really a plural because you can't 'have a hot' for someone.

Some similar words (frequent visitors to Chi) are 'odds' (as in betting) 'suds' and 'dues' which have to to be paid. Then there are the 'pair' words - pants, briefs etc, not to mention 'tong' and 'tongs'. I've a feeling there is a full list available to solvers, but I can't remember where.

Whateverman, hots became an acceptable word last year, following a suggestion by mkenuk. The discussion was in this thread.

This post contains the list of acceptable words that end in S, and that are also words if the S is removed. Since that list, there have been a few additional -S words allowed - see the Word List Updates page to keep track of them.
