Suggested words - plugin, gulpin, gilp
« on: May 25, 2007, 11:29:41 AM »
Most dictionaries seem to have "plug-in" without offering "plugin" as an alternative, but I think they're definitely lagging behind usage trends. A Google search on "plugin" returns about 78 million results. So it will be added to our list.

For "gulpin", the Shorter Oxford gives the credulous person meaning, but also a second usage as a nautical colloquialism for a marine. Also, there's a BBC website on Northern Ireland that has this to say:

Quote
Gulpin - Person slow on the uptake.
' Sure that gulpin wouldn't know what you're talking about.' From: JP Devlin.

Dominic Campbell adds: Gulpin is often used to describe an uncouth, unmannered person. (esp. in Tyrone) eg: "That's an ignorant gulpin, so he is"

Maybe Dean can comment on this, given his Ulster roots.

Anyhow, "gulpin" seems to make the grade as a Chi word.

As for "gilp", most of the dictionaries I looked in seem to have "megilp" and "magilp" for linseed oil mixed with mastic varnish or turpentine, without offering "gilp" as an alternative, although the Shorter Oxford entry for "megilp" says, "Also magilp and other vars." - which seems a strangely open-ended statement. But "gilp" certainly does appear to be in use as one of those "other vars". A Web page called the Specialist Decorator Dictionary lists "gilp", but has neither "megilp" nor "magilp". [Are these related to Gog and Magog, I wonder?]

So I think "gilp" makes the grade too. Just as well - I wasn't looking forward to being set upon by T's pack of attack students. By the way, our word list already includes "megilp" and "magilp", as well as "gilpy", a lively young girl; lively, sportive. [And, T, I hope you're feeling a bit more gilpy this morning.]
