wives
« on: April 06, 2012, 06:32:20 PM »
I unsuccessfully played wives in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  In a previous post of mine about irregular plurals (life/lives) Alan had noted:

"But it does seem wrong to rule out wives because of the rare verb wive."

However, it wasn't on the recent update list.  So, Alan, can you please add it?

You beat me to it, Morbius. But in the same game 'alewives' (a herring-like fish) was common. Presumably there is no rare verb 'to alewive'!

I've heard of most of the fish whose names have recently been changed from common to rare but I've never heard of an alewife (I presume that's the singular?)

Perhaps this one ought to join the rare words too, for the sake of consistency.

I know the word - mostly in the ecological damage to the Great Lakes sense - but I'm fine with having it made rare.

I'll make alewives rare. The singular alewife is already rare.

As for the original question, wives, I'll finally remedy this anomaly now.
