Help! Need a name for a new band.
« on: January 11, 2012, 02:55:17 PM »
I believe there is no better pool of global talent in wordsmithing than we have here in Chihuahua.

You all (y'all) know the history.  I used to play with a band, not any more.  I picked up a new instrument, and am in the process of putting together a smaller band.

Music:  Traditional Irish (old school), a little non-traditional Irish, a smattering of Scottish, some American Irish, a little Bach (if requested, not likely).  Maybe a bit of non-Celtic on request (not likely, but can do at least some Animals, Floyd, Stones, Zeppelin, Scruggs), but at least 99% Celtic.

Instruments:  Hammered dulcimer and rythm guitar

We booked a gig on St. Patrick's Day, but we do not yet have a name.  The owner of the venue would like to put a name on the advertising.

Any suggestions?

Well, I suppose you could have an animal theme like "Chihuahua".  There are some wonderful Celtic animal symbols with some ancient artwork, (google these) which, when tweaked a bit, perhaps with instruments included, would help with illustrating posters.  How about 'Foxy Celts', or  Raven Celts?  It is a starting point.  (Badgers? dormice?  shrews?).   ADA

To one and all, your level of creativity continues not to disappoint.  So much to choose from!

Alas, many of the suggestions have already been taken by other bands.

Since we also can also play a fair number of Scottish tunes, I am also considering "Irish Thistle".

We do have plenty of time; more ideas are more than welcome!

I have been somewhat overwhelmed with suggestions from forumites and other good friends.  My expectations were high, but you have outdone yourselves.

Some other notables that have not yet been posted:

Thistle Dew (I really like the pun, but the name has already been taken)

Ceilidh Nights

Blue Ridge Ceilidh

As I recall, RM already knows this (please be patient).  Ceilidh is pronounced KAY-lee, and has at least two definitions.  It is a gathering of friends or a musical jam session.

You are correct.  It is a Gàidhlig [Gaelic] word which originally meant gathering of friends, but as this often involved music, it has also come to include a jam session or any kind of musical gathering, usually involving traditional instruments such as fiddle, accordion and drums.  It is also very commonly used to describe an event including traditional Scottish country dancing with accompanying (live) band: most pupils will learn several dances whilst at school in Scotland and a Céilidh is a common, often at least annual event at schools, clubs and organizations.  Knowing some of the dances is always a help, but there is generally a "caller" who will be up on stage with the band calling out directions to help out those who don't know the steps [or who have had a dram too many and forgotten...].
