torbie / torbies
« on: July 30, 2011, 10:14:20 AM »
Neither torbie (also spelt torby) nor torbies was allowed in Thursday's Challenge. It is rather common amongst cat fanciers and, it seems to me, ought to at least qualify as a rare word on a game named after a dog.

Not a word I'd ever knowingly come across before, but I googled it and it seems to be a genuine term for a particular kind of markings (is that the term?) on cross-bred cats (tortoiseshell/tabby); I'm not a great cat-lover (a dog is a man's best friend), but some of the pics of these moggies did seem quite pretty.

@TRex.  Perhaps it's BECAUSE the game is named after a dog...  ;D

My 14+ pound kitten (not a torby, btw) could beat up a chihuahua!  ;D

A 14lb kitten?! What is it? A lion?

The only dictionary I found torbie in was Wiktionary ("A diminutive form for tortoiseshell tabby cat"), and I didn't find it in a few corpora and newspaper indexes. However, it is used by quite a lot of cat-related websites and books, so I think it qualifies as a rare word.

The spelling torby is used occasionally, but not enough to persuade me to include it. So this means the plural torbies will not be acceptable, except in puzzles that allow all plurals.

Thank you again. A good decision on 'torby', methinks.
