Photo Problems
« on: May 17, 2007, 11:20:23 AM »
Linda mentioned in another topic that she had problems changing her photo, and I see from the error log that she is not the only one.

One likely cause of difficulties is that your photo must be less than 128 kB in size. I could increase this limit, but there doesn't seem to be much point since your photo will be squished down on the server to a much smaller size.

So if your picture is bigger than 128 kB, you need to make a compressed version on your computer first. (This also applies to any picture you want to send as an attachement to a message.) One way of doing this on many computers running Windows is as follows. (This takes a while to describe, but only a few seconds to do.)

  • Get a directory listing that shows your picture, in Windows Explorer/My Documents, etc
  • Right click the file
  • Select "Send To"
  • Select "Mail Recipient"
  • A little window should pop up, offering to resize your picture
  • With "Make all my pictures smaller" selected, click OK
  • If all goes well, a new email message should appear, with a resized version of your photo attached
  • Don't send this message anywhere, but right click on the attachment and select "Save As..."
  • Save the file somewhere you can remember (not in the folder it came from or it will overwrite the original)
  • Finally, update your forum profile with this resized photo

I hope this will work for you. If not, let me know, and we can work out something else.

No I bloody well don't ... sounds like men things to me!  Bet you don't know about Maslow's Hierarchy of Needs, do you, smarty pants?   Can you explain the difference between Psychomotor, Cognitive and Affective domains?  What is ipsative assessment?  What is Spider's Web culture?  I could go on but I don't like to show off!!  I know you're going to look these up now and pretend you knew them anyway!!!

Still can't change my photo - don't tell Alan though, he might ask me to email one to him - as you are going to (ha ha ha ha - miss greeny frogface!)  By the way, where has Giacomo gone?  You've scared him off with your scary photo - Dean will be next!   ;D

It may be gibberish to you, Miss, but it took years of blood, sweat and tears to gain such vast and specialised knowledge!  Fat lot of good it's done me too!!!

Still can't sort it out - did what Alan suggested but I don't have Outlook Express configured on my computer (don't want it either) and as I borrow a digital camera from time to time can't work out how to make pic smaller on that either!!!  Thick, or what?  Speaking of photos, it has come to my attention (because I'm quick on the uptake!) that we don't have an image of 3B - come on threebee, let us know what a super brain looks like.  I hassled T for hers and look where that got me!!!

It's most unusual that I have time to mess around on computer at the weekend but my hubby is in bed after doing a night shift (poor baby!!! ha ha) and my son is still in bed due to lazyitis and too much partying.  Just me and the cat at the moment and he's not too brilliant at conversation so here I am!

Linda, There's almost certainly some program on your computer you could use to shrink your photo. For example, the Paint program that comes as part of Windows. If you open a photo file with Paint, you can use Stretch/Skew from the Image menu to reduce the dimensions of the photo. As anonsi says, pictures from digital cameras tend to be very large, and the maximum dimension of your member picture is 65 pixels either across or down. So you could possibly shrink your photo to 10% in both dimensions, and it would be small enough to upload, but still have all the detail needed. Let me know how you get on.

(By the way, how did you get your existing photo up there? Is it really a photo of you, or did you just download it from some university Web page?)

Will give it a go, Alan, but think I've tried Paint before!  I have wondered myself how I had no trouble uploading my original pic - it was taken on the same camera and saved to My Pictures (I think) and went without a hitch!  Will keep you posted as to my progress or lack thereof!

Well, Linda, I've been thinking about the piccy thingy. I take pictures for my job a lot, and am usually am behind the camera, even at home. Therefore, I only have a few shots of me even and realized that most of them really look bad. Before I dare post anything, I'll need to go to a professional studio and get a total makeover, choose an appropriate flattering outfit ("do these pants make me look fat?"), then make sure the lighting is just so, and the setting of course must show my penchant for exotic places. So, it's either work two jobs to accomplish all that (take maybe a year or so), or post something like this:

                               me                     that                           insanity &
searching words    last common word          complete breakdown
                            "ooohhh"              "grrrrrrrr!"                     "phhhtttt"

                              ^   ^                --   --
                              O   O                  P    P                              X   X
                                 I                        Y                                   V
                             u===u                   WW                               ****

Anyway, that'll have to do for now. I'll try.

Cheers all,
3-B

This new, Orwellian, presence might take a bit of getting used to.
