As someone who sews, I thought this was an option

Well after reading that very informative article by Threads, I’ll never think of sewer as a place underground full of yucky stuff again. It’ll be like close (I firstly think of something near me rather than something getting smaller as in closing up) and resent - I always think of send again rather than being unhappy with something. Actually once I start thinking about this, there’s a lot of words in the written form that I immediately think of in only one meaning and I’m not sure why. Even in my head I say close differently to close - hope you know what I mean!
I suppose I mostly think of seamstress, but I know it’s gender biased, so Perdita, do you think of yourself as a sewer or a sewist or a seamstress? Or is that only if it’s your profession? Like tailor?

This is not a word  I'd encountered, but it is in a few dictionaries, such as Collins, Wiktionary and the OED. And as the linked article demonstrates, it's been in occasional use over many years.

These days it looks like the word sewist is used more often in Canada than anywhere else. An example from March 2023 in the Winnipeg Free Press:

Quote
Everyone loves Gertie, a superstar in the world of quilters, sewists and fabric artists.

And it's been used in books, such as the 2012 title Sewing Solutions: Tips and Advice for the Savvy Sewist.

I'll add sewist to our word list, as a rare word.
