Words / Doric? Uber?
« on: May 29, 2007, 12:35:03 PM »
Hi, Alan.

A couple of suggestions . . .

Doric has meaning for people who have studied architecture, but I am not sure of its capitalization.

Uber is borrowed from German, meaning "over", or "extreme".  Common usage: "uber enginneer" or "uber geek".

Cheers, mate!

Word Games / shuffle results
« on: March 31, 2007, 01:01:33 PM »
I just read the results of the newly introduced shuffle feature, and I believe you might have missed the point.

The results of including the shuffle feature are mostly inconclusive, in terms of the total scores, but that is not really the point.  If people find the game more enjoyable with the shuffle feature, then I would count it as a success.

Good onya!  (hope I pronounced that right)

Whatever / new research topics?
« on: March 26, 2007, 12:20:38 PM »
My wife and I are the type who cannot look up a single word in a dictionary or look up one topic in an encyclopedia.  We find so much interesting stuff that we always end up with at least a dozen new words or at least as many interesting topics.

Question for fellow pups:  Is this a common trait?

Also, suggested word and topic for further research: Cyser (type of mead, made from honey and apples).

Cheers!

Words / suggested word: intel
« on: March 01, 2007, 02:30:33 PM »
I am not referring to the name of the large corporation.  I am referring to the abbreviation for intelligence, as in army intel or business intel.

Thanks!

Words / suggested word: dewet
« on: February 26, 2007, 02:52:14 PM »
Wetting and dewetting reltate to fluid mechanics.

When a fluid is on a substrate, it will wet or dewet the substrate.  If the fluid wets the substrate, the fluid covers the substrate with a uniform film.  If the fluid dewets the substrate, it gathers into droplets or strings of fluid around dry patches.

Can we add dewet to the dictionary?  Thanks!

Words / proper nouns?
« on: February 26, 2007, 12:54:52 PM »
I agree that proper nouns (names, places, etc.) should be excluded from play.  There are so many unusual names (or unusual spellings of names) that most any combination of letters could be a name.

On the other hand, much of our technical vocabulary is derived from names or places.  Examples:

oort (as in the oort cloud)
petri (as in a petri dish)
Henry (unit of measure, inductance)

What is the general rule?  Capitalization?  As words migrate from being proper nouns into the realm of common usage, dictionaries frequently disagree on capitalization.

In the above list, the only capitalized word is the only one accepted by Chihuahua.  No, the dictionaries do not agree on its capitalization.  I capitalized it because that is what I learned in school, but this may have changed in the last few decades.

How do you determine when a word has become eligible?  Are either "petri" or "oort" eligible?

Cheers!

P.S.
Thanks, ever so much!  This is a marvelous game!
