Words / spoiler alert Sunday March 28

Hi, Alan,

I wasn't able to use  "releaf," which I've seen more commonly in the form "releafing," as in adding gold leaf to a previously gold-leafed object.

Googling the word got me a lot of entries on herbal medicines for animals, but I did find some that covered the process too:

I did see one entry using "releafed" as a past tense, so I think it's a regular verb.

Thanks for considering it.

Whatever / Happy Waitangi Day!
« on: February 06, 2010, 10:09:23 AM »
I know it's a little early on my side of the globe, but it's already Feb. 6 where it's celebrated, so I wanted to get my good wishes in early enough that New Zealanders would still see them!

Have a great time at the celebrations!

Admittedly, not one that comes tripping off the tongue, but "luft" is a term in chess - an empty space allowing the king space to move to avoid check.

Are we in the U.S. the only ones cruel enough to describe a fat person as an "oinker"?

And I was surprised that "unkilled" wasn't allowed.  It's used in steel-making, but I would think the other meaning would be even more likely, as in "no [fill in your favorite target - terrorist?  boss?] left unkilled."

It wasn't allowed in Sunday's puzzle.  I don't know about other places, but I certainly arrange to meet friends at approximately [number]ish, rather than an exact time.

Hi Alan, this has never happened before but I've been switched 3 or 4 times in the last few minutes to a random puzzle in the middle of typing a word in both the standard and challenge game.

Whatever / "Does anybody know...?"
« on: October 23, 2008, 08:44:09 AM »
Since there are so many knowledgeable forumites, this new thread deals with questions we'd like answers to without going to the trouble of looking it up ourselves.  An example would be "What is the origin of Groundhog's Day?"   This is more for fun and to explore all our collective knowledge than for exploring our research skills, though if we get stuck, I'm sure a citation or two will follow.

The only "rule" is - as if anyone around here follows rules - that it's a reasonable question about factual information, not opinion, and that it's answered from what someone already knows without doing any research.

Words / fora common?
« on: September 03, 2008, 11:37:44 AM »
I'm not quibbling about the word itself, just whether it is common.

Alas, in this benighted uneducated world, the plurals of Latin words are usually Anglicized with an "s" or "es".  I don't think I''ve ever heard the word "fora" used.  I've always heard "forums".  Or does the legacy of a classical education linger on in the Olde Country and at least some of its former colonies?
