Words / GLASNOST
« on: September 03, 2021, 04:23:58 PM »
G'day Alan, i know that there has been some informal discussion about glasnost & that you, Mike & others have made it clear that the word is very familiar to yourselves, historians & those who follow worldwide politics & have a good memory.
None the less, i would ask that you focus on the regular chi formula to consider reclassifying glasnost as a rare word & no longer allow it as a seed word.
In a similar vein, i would also like to challenge the status of fatwa.

Word Games / 7 by many club
« on: July 21, 2021, 03:53:47 PM »
In recent weeks there have been quite a few personal messages exchanged by several forumites about the 7 by many game.
So just because i can & also because i thought that it might be a bit of fun, i have decided to create this thread which is dedicated to players of the increasingly popular " 7 by many " game.

OF COURSE, AS ALWAYS, PLEASE BE MINDFUL NOT TO MENTION ANY SPOILERS IN YOUR COMMENTS ON AN OPEN GAME.

I will start the conversation by congratulating yelnats  (Stanely ) on his rosette in yesterday's game, hopefully no one noticed that he also surpassed my score by two.

Sorry Alan, i should have started a new thread in the first place as it was not my intention to reignite the nimby discussion, i was simply trying to copy the following quote from that thread ;

" I didn't think there were a lot of obsolete words classed as common, Les."

You are correct Alan, there are not a lot of obsolete words or archaic spellings that are classed as common & that just makes it all the more frustrating when you do come across one, especially if they just happen to be the last " common " word that you are looking for.
I have noticed a couple that have come up recently ; troth & faerie & would appreciate it if you would consider making both of these words rare.

Words / Delft
« on: June 07, 2021, 06:17:12 PM »
I was going to challenge the status of delft ( appropriately enough from yesterday's challenge game ) until i did a search & saw that Jacki raised the issue in 2019.

Delft was the least played common word but was found by 104 players ( about 24% of the 435 players)

And guess who was one of those players?
Jacki not only played delft but also achieved a rosette.

The lesson for me is not to be shy about challenging the status of words.
It does not matter if you are successful or not. I think that Jacki has shown that if you take the time & trouble to actually challenge a word then it is more likely that the word in question will be embedded in your mind for a very long time.

Thanks Jacki.

« on: April 07, 2021, 04:21:00 PM »
I did not receive much support when i recently suggested a few medical terms that i felt should be reclassified as rare.
So i wonder if lavage will be another washout ?

Words / CATARRH
« on: March 09, 2021, 06:55:57 PM »
G'day Alan, i would like to suggest a few words from recent games that you might consider for reclassification ;

CATARRH is from a recent 7 by many game.
It was found by 74 out 315 players ( about 23.5 % )
I was not one of those players who found it & it cost me a rosette.
Then in the very next 7 by many game, the only common word that i could not find was CYSTITIS ( found by just 21% of players)
Perhaps if i had the use of a LOUPE ( from previous standard game ) i might have had a better chance of finding these words.
My submission is that all 3 of these medical terms are not common for the average player & should all be made rare.

Words / dunning
« on: January 29, 2021, 03:02:48 PM »
From the just completed 7 by many game ;
dunning was the last word that i found & that was only due to a bit of perseverance, a fluky guess & a lot of luck. (Otherwise it was yet another rosette frustratingly missed! ).
I suspect that Alan will tell me that even though it is not listed in my dictionary, this 17th century word is commonly used in America, England, Woop Woop or somewhere & may decline my suggestion to reclassify it.
None the less i would be interested to here from those players (48%) who found the word ; did you honestly have any idea of it's meaning & if so, how have you come across it?

Whatever / International Test Cricket
« on: January 19, 2021, 07:37:54 PM »
Congratulations to India who have just pulled off an amazing series win over Australia in Brisbane to retain the BORDER / GAVASKAR trophy.
They were totally humiliated in the first test in Adelaide when the entire side was bowled out  for a record low score of just 36 runs.
Then their captain & star batsman leaves the tour to be with his wife for the birth of their first child.
They are given no chance as they go to Melbourne for the second test as they begin to suffer injuries to their pace attack.
Against all odds, they fight back to win the Melbourne test.
The third test was held in Sydney & once again as their injury toll mounted they were given no chance but managed to hold on for a draw. (that result may been different if the Australian captain Tim Payne had kept his rubbish sledging to himself & concentrated on his wicket keeping )
So as we head to the final test in Brisbane, it is one all in the series, Australia must win to regain the trophy where as India can retain the trophy with just a draw.
By this stage of the tour, India have lost 8 of their first choice players & once again are given no hope of winning this final match in Brisbane with their "B" grade side after all it has been over 30 years since Australia lost a test match in Brisbane.
INDIA EASILY CHASED DOWN THE TARGET TO WIN BY 3 WICKETS
One of the most surprising & toughest series wins that i have ever seen!!!

Words / diss --- appointed
« on: January 19, 2021, 10:55:15 AM »
From the "dishonest " challenge game of a couple of days ago.
With my hit rate sitting on 100% ( a pretty rare achievement for me ) , i needed to find just one more common word for a rosette.
I thought that i had found it when i played doss but it came up as rare.
I was tempted to play diss but reckoned that at best it would also be classed as rare so i went looking elsewhere.
Of course when i viewed the solution diss was revealed as a common word.
My suggestion is that diss should be added to this list from 2011 ;

Words / TARTLY / TARTILY
« on: October 07, 2020, 06:04:20 PM »
G'day Alan, my query is from Tuesday's 7 by many game which left me feeling a bit sour.
I played tarty ( common )
I played tartily ( rare )
Inexplicably (& only the chi gods know why) i failed to play tartly.( common ) & that cost me a rosette.
I appreciate that tartly & tartily have very different meanings but fail to see why they have different classifications?
So the question that i am asking is would you consider it reasonable for tartly to be downgraded to rare?
Of all the common words played 17 others had a higher hit rate than tartly which was found by 135 players.
Just 2 other common words came in with a lower score & tartily was only found by 90 players.
I do realise that the the scoreboard carries little weight in your decisions but i feel it should be given some consideration.

Whatever / Belated hello & welcome
« on: September 14, 2020, 05:19:42 PM »
I was gifted my first home computer in late 2015 which is when i first started playing this game.
I had no idea what i was doing, first time on the internet let alone in an interactive game with people from all over the world.
Thankfully i registered with the forum, it was only due to a lot of very patient assistance from a number of forumites that i was able to learn just a little bit about how to use my new computer & it is only due to their encouragement that i persisted & continued to play the game.
It fascinated me that i was playing & communicating with people from all corners of the globe.
Due to some health issues i de - registered from the game in late 2018 & have only rejoined in recent months.
Anyway the point of this post is to highlight all of the brilliant new players (new players to me at least ) who have joined during my absence.
To name just a few who have registered in 2019 ; Sir Bidoof, Naureen, Garebear, Sam-kerr-no 1, Jancsika & there are numerous others.
My appeal to you all is to update your profile, nothing too personal, just let me know at least which country/city you are in ( especially if your Ozzy & smashing it on the scoreboard, you should be bragging about that) or even better register with the forum as i would love to see some input from you all.

Cheers Les

I am used to getting plenty of knock backs but to be totally rejected by callgirl was just a little bit rude.
