I've come across it so often in movies & tv shows that I wouldn't blink an eye at it.

I do think "betimes" is a strong candidate to be allowed in Chi as common.

Really?   ???  Don't recall ever coming across this word.  Or as betimes.  Rare, I would say.

I came across mummer in an old book in which the main characters were passionate about English folk dancing.  Apparently when done by those who know about such things, it includes all sorts of traditional, folk characters and occurences.  So not just dancing, not just acting, but the telling of old stories through both.  That's what I gleaned from the book.

Shall we try to save face and agree that the puzzles have been harder lately?

I'm with you!

The Daily Quest / I got one! (Rosette)
« on: June 03, 2019, 03:09:41 PM »
Since I stopped obsessively trying to get a rosette every game & using puzzle solvers in the process, it's been a long time since I got a rosette.

Today in the Standard game I am with 2 common words to find, and had reached 1 to find in the Challenge game.  Getting so close is almost worse than being a long way off.  Then suddenly I realised what I'd missed.

I do feel a sense of achievement, because lately I seem to have gotten worse at the game, rarely getting anywhere close to finding all 'common' words and often not even close to 'Best' level.

Whatever / Re: Page closing after I close 'Word meanings' window

It isn't happening to me at the moment.  It used to happen to me. I found I had to click outside the definition box first, then close it.  Don't know if that method works for anyone else at this time.

And we're back!  Well, for me anyway.  Thanks Alan!  Hope you had a lovely holiday.

Words / Re: Fifty bizarre words

Thanks Alan.  So many quaint words in that list.

Personal favourites are;

happify - just because it's cute
grinagog - sounds like something from Harry Potter, but very apt for some people
impluvious  - I like the sound of it
occasionet - in the interests of more colourful, precise language.

Words / Inapt/ Inaptly
« on: April 23, 2019, 02:22:44 PM »
In yesterday's challenge game, I saw that inapt and inaptly were not considered 'common'.  I didn't play them, and I can't remember if they are even accepted as 'rare' words.  Are they accepted?  And not considered 'common'?

Me too.  I have a mental list of words that I frequently miss, and sedan is on it.

So good at playing the 'baddies', even in "Love Actually".  One of my favourite actors.

I must admit that I felt it was one in a growing list of words that I define as "Chihuahuaisms", or words that may have some logic as to their existence and definition, but I would struggle to find in anything akin to normal use, either common or uncommon...

That said I did eventually strike lucky, by my normal method of thinking and finding some words, considering "perhaps it is a chihuahuaism!"

:D  I like that; "Chihuahuaisms".  Perhaps thinking of these (to me) obscure words in this way will make me think of them as quirks of the site rather than my usual Whiskey Tango Foxtrot reaction

I wouldn't have thought to play it, though it's familiar to me.  I certainly wouldn't have expected it to be considered common.
