Words / Poetries in yesterday's standard game
« on: March 12, 2019, 11:14:59 AM »
If POETRIES is the plural of poetry - which is the definition when you press on the word - and poetry is a common word, why isn't poetries? Maybe I've asked this before, like wrier and wriest, it doesn't follow.

Words / Comfit in yesterday's ten letter DISCOMFORT puzzle
« on: March 09, 2019, 07:12:43 PM »
Even the spellcheck wanted to change it to confit. Never ever heard of it, let alone it be classed as a common word. Thought I was good finding microdot! Comfit, well you live and you learn. I certainly wouldn't have ever thought of this word so it beats me how it's common.

The Daily Quest / Re Shortie in the Worthiest Standard

Didn't get SHORTIE. I guess it's one some old hands are familiar with, however I would have spelt it with a Y.

Word Games / The name of the game
« on: March 06, 2019, 06:09:02 PM »
Why is this game called Chihuahua? Is it because it's a tricky word to spell? I know I got it right in a typing test whilst being interviewed for a job in a newspaper classifieds department - you had to be a good speller when taking so many different ads.

The Daily Quest / The importance of arranging the letters
« on: March 02, 2019, 02:29:37 PM »
I wonder how much thought goes into arranging the letters of each puzzle when you first see it. Where each one is placed etc. I know some puzzles you look at and straight away you think of a million words whilst others draw blanks almost instantly.
Does Alan (or someone) look at each one and place each letter so it's harder or trickier for the player?
I know being able to shuffle the letters is a big help (one I only found out from my sister-in-law Doxydaisy) and that is great, but I think the initial placing of the letters certainly puts ideas in my mind that I can sometimes find hard to shake and it colours my train of thought.

Words / Wrier and wriest

Re the SWARTHIER challenge game three days ago, wrier was rare and wriest was common. How does that follow?

The Daily Quest / Just when you think you're doing well..
« on: February 22, 2019, 09:22:15 AM »
Honestly the last few games I've missed the most basic words - edit and hose for example. That's one of the things I enjoy about this game, you can't get too big for your boots! Except Alonzo is absolutely amazing of course and can't wait to see him back on top.

Confrere common? Call me a dunderhead but I've never heard of it.

Words / Arpeggio in the GEOGRAPHIC game
« on: January 21, 2019, 08:56:40 PM »
Played by 32 people, I wouldn't have thought this meets the definition of a common word, one which when you see it you say to yourself "Bum, I should have got that!"

Words / Palatine and plenum
« on: January 15, 2019, 07:03:08 PM »
Never heard of palatine - is it really a common word these days? Also I thought plenum (anagram of lumpen) was a common word? Couldn't see a change of status in the list so maybe I was mistaken?

Words / ALPS
« on: January 10, 2019, 11:38:44 PM »
So this isn't associated with any particular game however I was wondering why ALPS isn't a common word. Do you ever say ALP? Is there an example of using the word alp on its own?

Word Games / My Puzzles first attempt
« on: December 28, 2018, 07:28:26 PM »
So I made my own puzzle and missed one common word - and it was such a rare word - rang! That's so funny! You'd think I'd get them all! I picked the big word - AUBERGINE - because my dad and I played a word game from the newspaper with it years ago and it drove dad spare trying to work out what the nine letter word was. Anyway thanks to all that played and no one got a rosette, so room for improvement.

Words / Popsy in the OVERSUPPLY game

Popsy common when gran isn't? Even autocorrect keeps trying to make it poppy. Doesn't add up to me.

Word Games / My puzzles?
« on: December 26, 2018, 06:50:35 PM »
Call me thick, but I've never taken any notice of the last tab on the puzzles which says Your Puzzles.  Can anyone enlighten me as to what this is? Thanks
