Words / HACKLES in yesterdays’s Backslashes ten letter game
« on: October 12, 2023, 08:21:22 PM »
So HACKLES is not known and HACKLE was rare. Is this a case like measles or pants or slacks etc - raising the hackles on the back of my neck is a very common phrase, hard to imagine how you would even use hackle on its own.
Is this like AFIELD, a phrase commonly used - we had to look further afield for staff, which you changed the status to common Alan. The scary sounds raised the hackles on my neck - surely common? Not even a word? Could you please review this Alan?

Sometimes I don’t mind if I miss a word that is common, like THWART - should have found it, but I can’t even recall ever playing it and I knew the word I was missing probably had two t’s in it. Well done those few who scored a rosette.

Whatever / What seed word drove you nuts trying to find?
« on: September 22, 2023, 10:39:13 AM »
I’ve got two - the first was in the Sydney Morning Herald target game and it was FORCEMEAT. I’d never heard of it and at that time you could ring up and pay to hear the solution and I did!
The other was one that drove my dad nuts, I think I’ve mentioned it before in a past post, and it was AUBERGINE.
I’d be interested if others have memorable words that they’ll never forget (a good way to learn going forward though).

Whatever / How did you start playing Chihuahua?
« on: September 20, 2023, 10:41:08 AM »
Given the players on Chihuahua come from all around the world, I’m interested to know how players first found the game? After all, it has much earlier beginnings than say Wordle or the like. When I search “free word games online”, Chihuahua doesn’t come up (well not that I can see in the first few responses).
For myself, my sister-in-law introduced me.

The Daily Quest / Thursday Aug 10 Drawbridge game
« on: August 11, 2023, 06:40:08 PM »
How unusual to see only one rosette for a game - well done Starfish! I missed redbird- even now as I type it keeps changing it to two words but I have a memory of it being a common word from past games.

The Daily Quest / Aug 1 Standard puzzle ACCRETION and ANORECTIC
« on: August 02, 2023, 02:27:44 PM »
Ok so I found every common word except these two, but are they both common? More than double the players found ACCRETION compared to ANORECTIC - but I was still astounded over 113 found ANORECTIC.
I can’t recall these being playable words in my time on Chihuahua, but as Alan recently pointed out with TOURNEY, that’s not saying much!!
Alan, what do you say about these words, especially ANORECTIC? Should they be reclassified, or am I just the lone voice here?

Words / Tourney in July 28 YOUNGSTER challenge game
« on: July 29, 2023, 08:54:40 AM »
I’ve never heard of Tourney, apparently short for tournament. When you press on the meaning it says the verb form is archaic.
Maybe back when printing was done by hand the word was too long and it was easier to abbreviate it, but I’m a pretty avid sports fan and have yet to hear or read the word.
I love that Chihuahua introduces me to new words, but 52 players from 319 found it (I’m surprised so many did actually), but I still would say the figures put it in the rare camp.
Would you please review the status of this word Alan? Thank you.

Words / 21st July Schnitzel game
« on: July 22, 2023, 11:59:25 AM »
Do you think I could spell Schnitzel properly! I know how to spell it but I kept entering the letters incorrectly and before I knew it I’d had two unsuccessful attempts and I couldn’t help but laugh and think they’re a lot easier to eat than spell!

Words / Vaping in yesterday’s standard Grapevine puzzle
« on: May 25, 2023, 10:33:37 AM »
How exciting to play VAPING yesterday and have a new anagram with PAVING. Many will know Mkneuk or Mike, who sadly has not played for quite some time now, and he once told me that anagrams were pretty much the key to Chihuahua.
And great to see that 420 players found it too.

Words / INGROUND in yesterdays ten letter REBOUNDING game
« on: May 09, 2023, 09:12:43 AM »
Tried INGROUND (as in swimming pool) but not known. In Australia we have above ground or INGROUND swimming pools.
Is this only known here? Like the word ensuite written as one word, which is also not accepted.
Being in real estate both are words we use frequently in advertising.
Alan, you’ve already explained ensuite is more widely known overseas as en suite, but what about INGROUND? Should it be added as a word?

Words / Comity in yesterday’s ten letter Mediocrity game
« on: May 04, 2023, 08:47:58 PM »
Found by 7.7% of the players, COMITY was not a word I’m thinking is a common word. Alan could you please review this word’s status? Many thanks.

Words / AQUIVER in yesterday’s QUAVERING game
« on: April 04, 2023, 04:28:55 PM »
I played AQUIVER and was very surprised to see it was a rare word. As the avid reader of Mills and Boon romance novels in my formative adolescent years I would have thought the word was prevalent enough in those novels alone to give it common status. Heaving bosoms and racing pulses and all aquiver with excitement and anticipation.
Surely this word should be changed to common? Could you look at it please Alan?

Whatever / Daylight savings
« on: April 02, 2023, 10:53:40 AM »
I hate it when Daylight Savings ends! But I do like the morning puzzle being an hour earlier. This is probably a really dumb question but do you change it Alan to suit Australian time lines or is it something that happens world wide?

Words / Neuritis in the UNIVERSITY ten letter game
« on: March 26, 2023, 12:13:47 AM »
Played by 20 (to be honest I’m surprised so many knew it) from 249 players, neuritis is apparently a common word? I pressed on it to see its meaning and it’s a nervous condition.
Now I’m not saying it’s not a perfectly valid word, but I would like to ask that it be reclassified as rare because I’ve never heard of it and given the numbers over 90% of players haven’t either.

Words / Six from 266 found LAMASERY
« on: February 01, 2023, 07:04:09 PM »
The ten letter MEASURABLY puzzle had LAMASERY as a common word, and this was found by only six knowledgeable players.
Now I know it’s a monastery for Buddhists so thanks Chihuahua for broadening my vocabulary! Could I ask this word be reviewed please Alan as a common word. Thanks.
