Whatever / Always a moment I can’t wait for…
« on: March 08, 2024, 07:06:27 PM »
When I’ve failed to earn a rosette I simultaneously look forward to and dread the turnover moment for the solution to see what I’ve missed. If it’s something like BUSBIES in last night’s ten letter Grubbiness puzzle I don’t mind because I don’t think I would have ever found that!

Words / Bifold - suggestion for new common word
« on: February 21, 2024, 08:10:09 PM »
Yesterday’s FORMIDABLE ten letter challenge provided the opportunity for me to play bifold. I was quite surprised it is classified as a rare word. In Australia a bifold door is a big plus real estate wise, so thought the word would crop up a lot. What say you Alan? Is bifold common enough now to be promoted or is it more often two words - bi fold. In my experience as a real estate agent it’s most often written as one word.

The Daily Quest / Peccary in yesterday’s ten letter challenge
« on: January 13, 2024, 09:27:13 PM »
Ok so 34 from 250 odd players found PECCARY - a common word apparently- which I did not. It’s pretty uncommon in my view. What do others think? I’d hate to ask Alan to review its status if you all thought it was common.

Whatever / How do I?
« on: January 11, 2024, 12:04:18 PM »
I know someone will explain to me how I change my personal information - I have spelt Yahtzee wrong. And for the life of me I can’t work out how to fix it. Thanks!

Whatever / EMULATOR in yesterday’s Somersault ten letter game
« on: December 11, 2023, 08:57:20 PM »
Ok, so I know it’s the common word I missed, so don’t want this to sound like sour grapes, but how commonly is EMULATOR used in the world today? Absolute props to Rhino who blitzed it in minutes it seemed to get a rosette and Morbius who was slow, steady and got there even though he and I were puzzled as to the the seed word for a long time!! About ten percent found EMULATOR - is this word deserving of its status Alan or should it be reclassified to rare?

Words / The Oxford Dictionary’s word of the year
« on: December 05, 2023, 11:01:36 AM »
I’ve never heard of it - RIZZ - meaning charisma, a shortening of the word by dropping the cha and ma at the beginning and end like fridge in refrigerator and ‘flu in influenza. This makes me feel so old! When I’ve not  heard of it at all!

Whatever / Forum profile photo query for Alan
« on: December 04, 2023, 01:33:48 PM »
I like to change my profile photo with the seasons and enjoy taking pictures of flowers and gardens and I was wondering if there was a way for the past posts to keep the photo they had at the time of posting? There probably isn’t cause I’m not technically-minded, and it’s not important, it just would be nice to look back at an old post and see what was current then. And be fun for those with photos of the themselves to look back and see then and now!

Hi Alan, I just wanted to ask you why you tell players how many words there are using all the letters? No criticism or anything, just curious. Today I went to the Challenge game and there are three using all the letters, only one common. And it just made me think, wondering if it’s a courtesy or a warning or what the reasoning is behind the notice. Cheers

Whatever / Tumbrel in yesterday’s ten letter BUTTERMILK challenge
« on: November 26, 2023, 08:02:43 PM »
Is tumbrel common? An alternative spelling to tumbril for medieval torture. Is tumbril common then? Alan, could you please review the status of tumbrel. Surprised that roughly ten percent of players played the word,  but how commonly used is the word now? Thank you.

Whatever / Yesterday’s Lumberjack 10 letter game
« on: November 25, 2023, 09:47:36 PM »
I really enjoyed playing this game - so many juicy letters! I can’t remember when I last had three outstanding common words to find and it was a real brain teaser. Having said that, I’m not so sure that buckram is common - actually I’ve never heard of it. Abjure was a bit iffy too but I’ve heard of it - up there with deponent (recently made rare which I didn’t agree with). But great to have a really interesting combination of letters.

The Daily Quest / Aargh! Don’t you hate it when you miss a basic word!
« on: November 02, 2023, 07:08:46 PM »
Yesterdays ten letter IRRELEVANT game was a pearler - full of tricky words and I love a puzzle with a V in it! I was so chuffed getting retrieval (patting myself on the back) and missed VEIN!! Isn’t it funny how Chi always has a curve ball!!

Whatever / Scrabble record
« on: October 29, 2023, 05:14:13 PM »
My husband and I play Scrabble regularly and today we achieved three record scores (we keep them for Scrabble and Yahtzee to just make it more interesting over the years).
Today I scored ZESTLESS as a triple triple seven letter word for 212 points, previous record for one word was 203 by my husband so smashed that!
Then my personal total score was 612, with two seven letter words (previous high score was 565 scored by me with 3 x 7 letter words).
Finally our combined score was 919, previous high was 901.
A red letter day indeed. If only I could get the last common word in the 10 letter game!

The Daily Quest / Is it just me or…

Is anyone else finding the ten letter word games pretty challenging lately? It’s been very good brain teasing!

Words / Protege in yesterday’s REPORTAGE challenge game
« on: October 18, 2023, 07:32:47 AM »
I was surprised protege was not a common word, admittedly only 65 people played it, but that was more than played APOGEE, apparently a common word. Is it not deemed common because of the diacritics used (I had to google this I think it’s the right word for the symbols on the letters!)? Because Chihuahua accepts BLASE as common and it has diacritics.
And I would think PROTEGE is certainly as well known around the English-speaking countries as BLASE. Perhaps dare I say even more so!
Could you review the status of PROTEGE please Alan?
