Greetings

I was sitting at the computer, just finishing a session, when my kindergarten aged grandson sat on my knee.
Much to my surprise, he understood the screen contents instantly, and suggested a word, 'cat'.

Of course I would like to encourage this sort of activity for inquiring young minds.

Before I start searching through what might be out there on the internet, I thought it appropriate to ask if any members here have had good experience or good suggestions for me.

Thanks

Reminds me of a 'funny' story.

We had a European teenage relative come and stay with us for 6 months.
Upon arrival at home, we sat down for a cuppa and a chat.

Our teenager asked "wanna bikkie?"
Our poor visitor who thought he had a good grasp of high school English, was totally perplexed.

For the non-Australians, the translation was 'would you like a biscuit?'

Now that's a tipple, fer sure.

I have had the good fortune to sip many a fine dram.
I am even more fortunate that my interest in fine whisky was piqued when many fine drams were quite affordable.

I rarely spend great sums.
I am afraid to be disappointed after spending substantial funds.

Again, I could go on, at the risk of boring those not into whisky.
I almost got a free tasting of a Black Bowmore, a few years back.
That, I rue to this day.

On the other hand I did manage to procure some Bowmore Maltmen's Selection at a much more modest price.
( That is a story in itself ).
I shared that with some friends, one of whom had tasted the legendary Black Bowmore.
He said that they were on par.

Slainte mhath

( A traditional Scottish toast - Cheers )

DOH, how could I not get that ?
Face palm.

At the risk of being boring, here's some whisky info.

Blended Whisky
A blend of many types of whisky from many distilleries.
Think Johnnie Walker etc

Single Malt Whisky
Whisky made solely from barley ( malt ).
Produced at a  single distillery, but may be a vatting of several casks.

Single Cask Whisky
On odd occasions a barrel just turns out magically well.
Rather than mix it with anything, it can be bottled as a single cask whisky.

My dram the other night was a Glenlivet 12 single cask @ a lazy 66% ABV
Bottled by the independent company - Signatory Vintage.

OK.
Postdating puzzle is closed now.

The word I intended to type was PITON.
I am not a climber, but I know the word.

I accidentally typed ( clicked ) PITOT.
I know the word, but probably would not have played it.

At closure there were only 2 players who played PITOT.
I guess there's not many pilots among us.

Now, off to my whisky cupboard to select a worthwhile dram.

Sometimes a lucky accident happens.
Whilst entering a word in the current 10 letter puzzle, I accidentally mis-typed a letter.

The typo was a real word.
Yes, it was a word I knew, but hadn't recognised at the time.

It is a somewhat special word.
For much of the time, I was the sole player who played the word.
Now there is a second player.

I consider any word with a single digit count to be a worthwhile effort.
It doesn't happen often.

If it remains in single digits, I may have a dram tonight.

What does CDO stand for.

OCD but in alphabetical order.

However, I believe there would be a lot of single Malt (especially cask strength) sippers who would advocate a few drops of water to release the flavour.

I approach this from 2 different angles, and a bit of experience.

#1
I gladly acknowledge that the folk at the distillery know much more than I do.
Thus the way they choose to bottle any particular whisky is about the best that it can be.
I am confident they will taste it at various dilutions before deciding the optimum strength to go into the bottle.
It would be a huge leap to think otherwise.

#2
I have a number of cask strength whiskies.
Sometimes ( rarely ) I do add water.
There is both a dynamic effect and a static effect, in my opinion.
Immediately after dilution, interesting and inexplicable ( good ) things happen, and then wane.
If you leave it in the glass diluted for a while, it relaxes to a static condition, much like I guess it would be, if bottled that way.

Whisky professionals, those who taste and rate over 100 whiskies a day, yes, they do spit it out.
However 'we' amateurs rarely do that.

I once tasted a Pakistani Whisky ( for tourists only, not locals ) and I spat that out.

Apology accepted.
Thank you.

Just to be absolutely clear:

*  In acknowledgement of the spectrum of people out there, I included the word SPOILER, indeed twice.
*  I even used uppercase letters, roughly equivalent to raising my voice.
*  I deliberately positioned one instance of SPOILER at the start, and one at the end, in acknowledgement of the wide variety of platforms that users may be using, and the chance that text may be formatted in a variety of manners.

Whilst we may disagree on when a spoiler can be published or mentioned, I think I have taken reasonable steps to accommodate most reasonable people.

Kind regards
Michael

Oh Dear

I certainly would not want to be forewarned !!
Especially based upon an erroneous assumption.

Your apology will be accepted at any time.
Otherwise I may be tempted to make a strong reply.

Hi

Hopefully I won't upset anyone by suggesting a word in an open puzzle.
However I don't want to forget this one, it might keep me going.

Today's 10 letter, 'enthusiast' puzzle, contains perhaps an additional 10 letter word, 'sustaineth'.
What say ye ?

I use Windows 7 on my PC but something weird has happened to the file manager.

Pat, I know a bit, but would certainly hesitate to call myself an expert.

Googling the issue, it seems that this problem arose many years ago, when Windows 7 was the norm, and it still persists today.
There is a parameter called DONOTREFRESH.
Some programs ( apps ) may set it or clear it.
That then ( sort of obviously ) affects the way your computer refreshes.

Have you recently installed a new program ?
This may be the culprit.

Microsoft do not seem interested ( at least as far as I could read ) in solving the issue.

F5 it may have to be.

Pat

Of course you are correct.
There are some fanatics out there who pay some amazing prices for rare items.

If you are interested, you can take a peek at:
www.whiskyauctioneer.com

I cannot fathom paying those sort of prices.
Even if I did, I can only guess that one might be disappointed if such a special bottle was ever opened and savoured.
How could anything be 100+ times better than a standard, or even expensive bottle at say 100 quid.

It's a fascinating world.

Hi Alan

Used to it or not, it's still nice.
Thank you.

Nearly as nice as finding a rare and special gem of single malt whisky, at an auction or at an old and dusty bottle shop when the vendors don't know what they have.
I have been lucky in the past, but not as lucky as some.

Another collector told me he recently spied an old bottle, and coughed up the asking price of $AU 300 without blinking.
When he got home he did a bit of searching and found that the only other bottle of this 1950 gem on sale was listed at $AU 17,000.

Ah .. I can only dream.
