TRex, here in Oz a cowcatcher would have never pushed a buffalo off the tracks. We are still talking about a train line from Alice Springs to Darwin, and have been for all my lifetime, which is the only area where it may push a water buffalo off the tracks.

But I did like one of the 51,200 google images - a cartoon which said, "I prefer to call it a cow exploder rather than a cowcatcher".

I got it after I got catcher and wasn't surprised by it. When I grew up all country trains had 'cowcatchers' at the front and Melbourne trams had a version of them. I will have a look at the vintage trams on the Melbourne City Circle when I'm next in the city. I expect they still have them.

In fact...

front and just below centre!

And a google image search found 51,200, even a Lego cowcatcher...

I think dialled is probably English spelling as I have always thought it was spelled with 2 l's, not one (I'm Oz). I didn't get the 1 'l' version.

íSi, y me gusta castellano! My Spanish friend tells me 'pendrive' (USB memory stick) is pronounced as it is in English, and 'violincello' picks up the Italian 'chello' although it can be written violinchelo'. íTwo exceptions is not bad!

As for spelling in English, it's interesting to read the history of English spelling. (I forget the link) It was not codified until well after the first English dictionary. Look up Shakespeare's will; he spells his surname 3 different ways.

The Germans take delight in mentioning that spelling competitions are weird. They suggest that a spelling competition in German would be as interesting as asking what number comes after 106. German is FONETIK!

In Costa Rica; you've got me nostalgic. I was there in 1968, the only country in the Americas where the police did not carry guns, has no army and is almost carbon neutral for energy.

A standout in the Americas. ¿Hablas castellano?

Words / Is "skun" a word?
« on: February 12, 2016, 05:38:54 PM »
Maybe it is just strine, or even a family word, but I have grown up thinking 'skun' (past irregular of 'to skin' - as in "skun like a rabbit") is a real word. But it wasn't allowed and wasn't in any dictionary I checked. Has anyone else heard of it?

I'm now in need of a Bex and a good lie down!

Thank you.

Maybe a sport to take over from fanarkling...
but that may only take on in Melbourne.

And you have done well with the cooking term!

Alan, you did so well with 'onager', could I suggest another challenge. Is there a 9 or 10 letter word in which the letters are in alpha order so that the word appears in uppercase reading down the table.

Word Games / Re: New additions ... progress report?

Alan, THANK YOU for the onager in ORPHANAGE. It started off my 70th birthday very well. Bur I did miss paean - 1 off the rosette.

I hadn't realised onager was also an anagram of orange. And I first read of onager as the asian ass,  many years ago.

I suggested hangi and (esp. as a vegetarian) am not very concerned as to when it is added. I am just pleased to have chihuahua and esp. chinchilla, both with so many bells and whistles, and ad free. THANK YOU ALAN!

And Alan, I went looking for a "target" puzzle in Spanish, and got a malware site. Are you interested in converting Chihuahua to Spanish?

And I'm waiting for a game when I can use ONAGER! The Age hasn't had one in all the years I have been doing them.

Just wondering if you have a list of the countries of registered users and numbers. It seems to me to have a larger than average Australian user base. And does there seem to be any reason for that. I've also only seen a couple of non-english speaking country based users.

Just wondering how you write your websites. Chihuahua is one of the best sites I have used (and Thank you very much for it) and Couplecinos is good.

I set up my first website in 1997 using Notepad and now look after 5 sites, all with Notepad. One I inherited had Joomla (and a redirect virus) that was fixed by going back to Notepad!

Kensington is a bit out of my area but will remember Couplecinos.

Thank you. Another word 'luau' I hadn't heard. I knew 'hangi' was 'lovo' in Fiji.

from wikipedia 'indigenous Fijian lovo, the Hawaiian luau, the Māori hāngi and the New England clam bake'.

Say Hello / Re: Welcome, yelnats

Thank you both. Yes, it is Stanley. And thank you Alan, both for the welcome and for the site.

I maintain five websites, all done in Notepad and none as sophisticated as Chihuahua. I haven't seen many sites as good.

I tried to learn C programming years ago, passed the units but really failed as I never tried to use it again whereas html was OK. I haven't looked at real java, just java script.
