Say Hello / Re: rogue_mother -- say hello!

Hi!  Yes, it took lots of practice.  When we first got a computer and started playing games on it, they became quite addictive.  I stayed up all night more than once.  Rogue was the one that hooked me the most.

The browser has been well-behaved since the other night.  I think I figured out what happened when my post-in-progress disappeared, so it shouldn't happen again.

Also, I'm not always at my computer when I'm logged in.  I pop in and out of the computer room to work at the game, then go about my business around the house.  If I get an inspiration, then I run back to try it out.

The ghost poster sounds like it could have been me.  I started a reply to the Cultural Thread.  I definitely was taking a long time to compose my thoughts.  Then my browser just ate my reply!  Don't know what happened, it just disappeared...I gave up after that, as my brain was tired.  I didn't know you could tell that I was posting?

While I recognize that Mary Cassatt was a groundbreaker in many ways, her work leaves me cold.  It resonates with a lot of people, including my husband, but her color palette just makes me say "eeeew!"  Reminds me of a dentist's office.

Among the Impressionists I like Corot, Manet and Renoir.  Among the Post-Impressionists I like Gauguin, Redon, and Henri Rousseau.  I am not up enough on art history to know if he is classified as Post-Impressionist, but I also like Modigliani.  Whenever I see Redon's painting of the Martyrdom of Saint Sebastian at the National Gallery of Art in Washington, D. C., I just want to cry.

The picture is a modified screen shot from one of my most favorite computer games, a single player adventure game called Rogue.  It dates from the old timey days when DOS was our PC's operating system.  The graphics were pretty primitive, as you can imagine -- only ASCII text characters were allowed.  The player had to travel through 26 levels of dungeons, fighting monsters of various sorts and picking up armor, weapons, and enchanted items with various magical properties that could be used to fight the monsters.  The prize was the Amulet of Yendor, found on level 26.  Once you found it, you had to fight all the way back out.  Rogue Mother was the name I most often chose for myself when I played that game.  Recently I found an online version of the game, so I still play now and then.

Hello!

Although there are other beltways, you have the correct one.  I do indeed live within spitting distance (so to speak) of the U. S. capital.  Our neck of the woods is called the Commonwealth of Virginia.

My dad was a career army officer, and we ended up in this area during his final tour of duty at the Pentagon.  I had enough of moving around while I was growing up, so my husband and I have been in the same house for 30+ years.

I have a bachelor of science in applied mathematics, which I parlayed into several years of computer programming before settling down to raise two daughters.  Now that they are grown and out of the house, I earn a few nickels doing genealogical research for other people.

Genealogy is my raison d'etre, but I love solving puzzles of many types, which led me to this website.
