Words / sproing!
« on: December 22, 2008, 11:49:13 AM »
I'd like to recommend sproing, one of my favorite onomatopoetic words, for inclusion on the list. It would join its near cousin, boing, which is already on there.

Word Games / Viewing 'Your Puzzles'
« on: November 30, 2008, 09:56:29 AM »
Alan, I have a request that relates to viewing the games in the 'Your Puzzles' section. There is a certain default for the order in which the puzzles are presented under the various tabs, which is fine. I can sort the puzzles into the order I would like to view the puzzles if I don't like the default, also fine. What I would like, if it is possible, is for Chihuahua to remember my sort preference, at least within a session if not permanently, so that I don't have to re-sort the games every time I click on 'Open...'. My personal preference in the 'You played' tab, by the way, is to view the games in the order in which they close. I am fine with the sort in the 'Active' tab, which seems to be the order in which the games were created.

Words / No brainer

I have discovered that the word brainer is not accepted by Chi. Sigh. It's a no-brainer for us...

Words / nearish
« on: November 07, 2008, 03:20:30 AM »
Buoyed by my success with earlyish, I would like to bring up the word nearish. This could also be formed in that same puzzle which produced earlyish and latish. Like earlyish, it was rejected, and like earlyish, it is probably more widely used than entries in dictionaries might indicate. Unlike the earlyish/latish combination, I'm not sure there is a corresponding word such as far-ish, or if there is, it must be used with a hyphen, precluding it from Chihuahua.

Words / earlyish
« on: November 01, 2008, 06:06:30 AM »
What's wrong with this picture? On one of the "Your Puzzles" games, we were able to form the word latish, and it was accepted. All well and good. BUT -- the word earlyish could also be formed from the same group of letters, and it was not accepted. It seems to me that earlyish is just as good a word as latish.

Words / tagua
« on: October 07, 2008, 01:36:35 AM »
Alan, I'd like to propose adding tagua to our lexicon. This is a tropical nut that is touted as an ivory substitute for making buttons, beads and small carved objects.

Words / patronym
« on: September 22, 2008, 10:45:45 PM »
I was disappointed when I tried patronym in one of the puzzles over the weekend. This fine word, which refers to a given name or surname based on one's father's first name, is well known to genealogists.  Examples: Johnson, MacNeil, Petrovna. The adjective form, patronymic, is perhaps more common, but has too many letters for Chi.

Words / reune
« on: June 27, 2008, 07:13:40 AM »
I'd like to have reune and its conjugated forms, reuned and reuning added to the approved list.  This back-formation from reunion, meaning to gather at a reunion, has gained some recognition by various dictionaries, as described in the July-August 1999 issue of the Harvard Magazine http://harvardmagazine.com/1999/07/pump.html.  Examples of its usage on the 'Net is problematic due to the fact that there is a common Spanish word with the same spellling.  However, here are a few examples:

1. Draft Dodgers, a/k/a Draft Resisters, Reune in Canada http://www.historywire.com/2006/07/draft_dodgers_a.html

2. Reune in June http://digicoll.library.wisc.edu/cgi-bin/UW/UW-idx?type=div&did=UW.V33I6.I0010&isize=M

3. Reune with Army Brothers http://kitsch-lee.blogspot.com/2007/09/reune-with-army-brothers.html

and finally, recognition by the Chinese that reune is an English word:

Words / gunge
« on: June 20, 2008, 01:32:47 AM »
Alan, it seems to me that gunge and gungy, which appeared as common words in yesterday's standard puzzle, are mainly British in usage.  I can't say that I am up on all the common words, by any means, but these took me by surprise.  Wikipedia identifies these as British colloquialisms arising from British television, and the shows involved are not seen on US television, so far as I can discern.

Word Games / Forbidden!
« on: June 14, 2008, 12:31:48 PM »
Alan, not too long ago I tried to post to the thread "Welcome, Toni" and I got a 403 error message, "You don't have permission to access /forum/index.php on this server. Additionally, a 404 Not Found error was encountered while trying to use an ErrorDocument to handle the request."  Bummer, dude!

Whatever / Iowa Tornado Aftermath
« on: May 31, 2008, 04:55:26 AM »
After hearing about the recent deadly tornado in Parkersburg, Iowa, we were all relieved to learn that anonsi was not anywhere near that scene of destruction.  Today I heard a news item related to this storm that has left me amazed.  Some items that were picked up by the tornado have been dropped on a town about 125 miles away, Prairie du Chien, Wisconsin -- items like checks, greeting cards, photos, a page torn out of a high school yearbook.  One photo with a name on the back is possibly of one of the victims killed by the storm.  Freakish and freaky!

Word Games / Keyboard commands
« on: May 25, 2008, 12:28:31 AM »
Recently I switched to using keyboard commands after acquiring a laptop with one of those annoying touchpads.  But I can't figure out how to clear a word without navigating to one of the the CLEAR buttons and clicking on it.  Is there a different way to clear the letters all at once, besides deleting them one at a time?

Words / reflush
« on: May 05, 2008, 02:34:53 AM »
The dictionary authors who failed to include reflush in their lexicons evidently don't use the sort of low-flow toilets that have been foisted upon the American populace in the name of water conservation.

The Daily Quest / A historic moment in Chi
« on: March 23, 2008, 02:51:26 PM »
T, you may have missed this historic moment, since you don't usually play the standard game, but PANTS appeared for the very first time in the puzzle solution yesterday.  Thanks to you for sticking to your guns, and thanks to Alan for finally seeing the light.
