Word Games / A touchy problem
« on: April 16, 2014, 05:02:06 AM »
This past weekend I was on the road visiting one of the Rogue daughters. While there, I played Chihuahua on her iPad using the Safari browser, very touchy-feely. In general this went pretty well, but I was constantly frustrated when I tried to scroll through my found words list. The space between the words and the margin of the box was sometimes very narrow and my fingers are not, so a very high percentage of my scrolling attempts resulted in my inadvertently "clicking" on a word to open the Wiktionary box. This led to much gnashing of teeth. Is this something that can be fixed, or is there some method I should employ to get around this?

Words / Conchie
« on: March 18, 2014, 11:44:19 PM »
I should have written about the word conchie the first time I missed it! Is this word really common? It is totally new to me (or at least new to my brain of a certain age). What I'd like to know is, what am I missing? Is this term for conscientious objector from another era or another country, or do I just have a blind spot? During the Vietnam War, when there were plenty of these, I always heard them referred to as COs.

A shout out to our favorite rhinophile on her birthday! I hope you'll be doing something suitably fun and eating and drinking things that are suitably yummy. All the best wishes from Inside the Beltway.

Words / I fain would know...
« on: March 04, 2014, 11:58:44 PM »
why fain is classified as common and lief is classified as less common. It seems to me that the same people who know fain would also know lief, so I believe that both words should share the same classification.

My quirky memory thinks that lief was at one time listed among the common words, but I can't find where its status changed, so perhaps my memory is playing tricks on me.

Words / Distrait
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:59:25 PM »
I have to question whether distrait, which was listed as common in the ten-letter puzzle from this past Monday, is, in fact common. It was new to me.

Words / Parky
« on: February 14, 2014, 12:54:23 PM »
Snowed in today, so I have time to "whinge" a little...Parky was one of the common words from yesterday's ten-letter puzzle. This appears to be a British word not common at all in the United States. I recommend that it be culled from the list of common words.

Say Hello / Happy birthday, A non-amos!
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:46:05 AM »
My brain is so cold that time has slowed down here. Ergo, by the power invested in me for living so close to the seat of government, I hereby declare that it is still officially your birthday and send you birthday greetings! Never mind that I am late. We operate on government time here, and everyone knows that we shut down when any snowflakes fall ;) No doubt you have whipped up a big batch of gumbo filé or jambalaya or your own magnificent creation (or all three) to keep you warm in the current frigidness. If our good wishes could keep you warm, it would be plenty cozy in the A household.

Words / Throw some shrimp on the ...
« on: January 25, 2014, 02:29:06 AM »
...braai! I'd like to suggest adding this word from yesterday's "aberration" puzzle to the less common list. I'm not from South Africa and have never been there, but this is one of the words I know from there. Braais have been written about occasionally in the food section of our local newspaper, and they are seemingly such an integral part of life there that I should think that a good number of people are familiar with this word. According to TheFreeDictionary.com, braai can be either a verb or a noun, so one might also add braaied and braaiing to the list (although I myself am only familiar with it as a noun).

Say Hello / Happy birthday, roberts!
« on: December 23, 2012, 06:52:41 AM »
If you are reading this, you have survived the end of the world as we know it, so bring it on! I hope you are celebrating the day in appropriate style. The Rogue family will be all together tonight, so we will hoist one in your honor (or not)! And many happy returns.

Words / RM whinges -- 10-Letter Spoiler 21 Nov 2012
« on: November 22, 2012, 12:11:35 AM »
I am frustrated by a couple of inconsistencies in today's 10-letter puzzle. Metered is common, but metred is not. On the other hand, mitred is common but mitered is not. ???????

Happy birthday, Dave! I hope your day is a good one filled with good friends and good food.

P. S. I'm still older than you, so there's no use in trying to catch up to me ;)

Words / There oughta be a law!
« on: November 28, 2010, 04:29:48 AM »
The slang word oughta is conspicuously missing from the roster of acceptable words. In light of the fact that similar constructs such as kinda and sorta can be played, I think that oughta should be added.

The Daily Quest / R_M gets a trophy -- NOT!
« on: November 28, 2010, 03:48:48 AM »
Alan, I have discovered an interesting after-effect of when you had to delete our word histories in order to restore functionality to Chihuahua last September. I had a couple of random games started for both the Standard and Challenge puzzles. In a moment of idleness I returned to these puzzles today. Naturally I had to start all over again, but the scorekeeping was somewhat schizophrenic. The score kept alternating between my new score and what was probably a combination of my previous score and my new score. The result is that I now have a trophy cup in each of the random games without having found all the words! Since it is fairly unlikely that I will ever get a trophy by honest effort, I am reveling in the moment. ;)
