I, too, battle with those who wear sandals in the snow ... but that's a minor disparity between friends.

Still buying the Lotto tickets -- I have faith that someday I could really win a massive jackpot that will free me up to travel and gadabout the globe. Or pay for my friends to come see me!

I love the sounds of hammered dulcimers. Last weekend, I was at the Texas Heritage Music Day and among the groups performing was a dulcimer band, and they were dressed in pioneer outfits. It was really nicely done, and the sounds are so sweet!

I love all those words! They're so expressive, while sounding so nonsensical!.

Ta, Linda -- still out of kilter on those time zones.

It appears in good working order, my dear hag! Again we come around to the Season of the Witch!  >:D >:D >:D

In another thread we chatted about visiting chi-pals abroad. What fun it might be if you ever crossed to our side of the pond! I just found a teapot (and tea-bag dish) with "EIIR" emblazoned on her 50th Jubilee and picked it up right away at a wee garage sale nearby. Could not resist scooping it up (for a few bob).

I've even heard of "s(ch)lub" ...  though rarely used.

Hey, rhino - sorry I missed your query. We're in the San Antonio area, the heart of the Hill Country which is quite spectacular, particularly in the spring when the bluebonnets are in full bloom. Of course, this year, they barely made an appearance for lack of rain. The climate in some parts probably resembles your Aussie diversity.

Are you up for a visit as well? Plenty to do no matter what your interest.

And, R-M, you would just relish the history here! Much of it in our area also pertains to the Lipan-Apache Indians, the old Camp Verde (and its fascinating camel experiment), buffalo soldier forts, and of course, old Spanish history. Germans, Czechs, Poles, all manner of Europeans settled this area once they realized the vastness of the land and how cheap it was. It's a treasure trove, really.

T - it certainly would be great see you in person as well.

Alright, birdy -- "fly" on out! Maybe during the avian migration periods. We also get a monarch butterfly invasion twice a year, some years are better than others.

That's some rugged weather you've had of late. I would think that fall is nigh in your area.

Here in central Texas, the scorching heat has finally tempered to the high 80-low 90 Fahrenheit range in the daytime, and we've had a bit of rain as well, which barely made a dent in the drought.

How totally apropos, mk! I can see top hats and tails and the tapping of Fred Astaire whenever I think of Cole Porter!

"oscar" - besides being a proper /noun name for a person, it is also a fish, as found in Wikipedia, and not written with a capital:

Astronotus ocellatus is a species of fish from the cichlid family known under a variety of common names, including oscar, tiger oscar, velvet cichlid, or marble cichlid.[1] In South America, where the species naturally resides, A. ocellatus specimens are often found for sale as a food fish in the local markets.[2][3] The fish can also be found in other areas, including China, Australia, and the United States. Although its slow growth limits its potential for aquaculture, it is considered a popular aquarium fish.

Can this be considered for an entry, perhaps as a "rare" word, although there are plenty of references to it in the fish universe?

No, I still have faith in the human race.  >o:D But things DO seem to be going to hell in a handbasket. As they have in every generation. There is a certain pushback or correction after situations start getting too far off track, going to the opposite extreme, and then land somewhere in the middle. Sometimes it just takes a few hundred years!  >:D

Coming from the east coast originally, hearing those words was common, but outside a certain perimeter, almost never. Although it was funny, because if I said "schlep" out here, most people got it because of the context, even though they did not use it themselves. Deffo a "rare" one.

Words / 'nother rejected word from Sept 30 - spoiler?

How about "yarder" ??

-- per wikipedia: A yarder is piece of logging equipment which uses a system of cables to pull or fly logs from the stump to the landing. It generally consists of an engine, drums, and spar, but has a range of configurations and variations such as the Swing yarder.

I've been hearing about this machine since watching a "reality" show "Swamp Loggers" ... Obviously, the equipment is highly specialized so I'd expect the word would be considered rare. I'm pretty sure it's legit, though and should be added to the acceptable word list.

Cheers!
