I’ll try to get this rebus right first off, this time.  If the last one was like pulling teeth, this one will be like eating chocolate.

France does a good line in food festivals, celebrating everything from lemons in Menton to the pink onions of Roscoff.

Roade sounds like a great village.  I thought you might enjoy a collaboration between ET and me.

Hi Jack

I've had a very busy morning.  I walked round Furzton lake while the sun was shining.  It was chilly and windy but lovely nonetheless.  I came home and did loads of chores.  It's now pouring with rain and I'm indoors thinking up cunning ways to try and baffle you a bit   >:D  Have to be honest I'm not getting very far!

I loved the collaboration between yourself and ET.  For some strange reason every time I see that now I think of the funny little alien who called home.  It's one of those daft things that gets lodged in your brain.  Well almost certainly not in yours - just mine

Your rebus was definitely like scoffing a very good Easter egg.  Very enjoyable  :)

In the absence of divine inspiration I'm moving across the border from France to their neighbours to the east. This event takes place in September and is the largest of it's kind in the world.

Picture one is one word eleven letters.  Please lose the first four and last four. Present tense for picture two - please change the third letter. (& lob in an umlaut over the second letter) Picture three is the palace where Winston Churchill was born.  Please use the last four letters.  The Gent in picture four scored a hat trick for England in the '66 World Cup final.  Please change the first letter of his surname. Picture five you're not interested in where it is but what.  Please lose the fifth letter. Picture seven is eleven letters.  Just use the last four.  Please lose the first three letters of picture eight (a noun) and pretend it's all on one line.
I've checked it umpteen times and hoping there's no mistakes.

My poor brain's fried.  I'm going to have a little snooze  :-Y

Hi Jack

It was a bit like pulling teeth but I got there in the end hurrah   I did in fact pay a visit to the dentist this morning but thankfully it was just a check up and no teeth were extracted!

My friend, and ex work colleague, Gill moved from Bletchley to Roade a few months back. After my trip to the dentist I drove to see her.  She treated me to lunch in the Roade House cafe.  It's a lovely place.  A cross between a cafe and a bistro.  I had a scrummy sausage sarnie.  I then enjoyed a guided tour of her new gaffe.  I think they're happy to be away from MK.  Gill says there are lots of social clubs, yoga, a library which shows films and also a great pub in Roade.  I'm quite jealous   It's only about a 30 minute drive away so not too bad.

I'm a bit knacked after all my excitement so I'm soon going to flop in my comfy chair in front of the box!

I hope your friends dad is on the mend.

We didn't find out any more about the cause of the blackout.  News of the event carefully avoided giving information about the cause.

I will tell you now in my rebus you had to change the letter to a 'y'.

Hi Again Jack

Not yet sadly.  He had prostate surgery and then last week had to have a pacemaker fitted.  I'm hoping he soon turns the corner.

I had guessed it needed to be changed to a 'y' but it's rest of it that has me baffled.  I've come up with a few solutions but Ms Google wasn't impressed with any of my suggestions!  I suspect I'm going to kick myself

Going to have a search for a few words and then watch the last of the present series of Death in Paradise.

We didn’t get a good start to the day.  Half of Redland Bay was blacked out from sometime before 5am and just after 7, We never found out the cause.  I had to boil my coffee water in a saucepan on the barbecue.

Well, Pen, that has put me in the right mood to see if I can keep you guessing for a little while.

A homophone of my rebus is a subject that many Parliaments around the world have debated. Quite often it is decided on a conscience vote and not on Party lines.

Hi Jack

It was a beautiful sunny Spring morning here.  I popped up to Barbs' and we had a lovely walk, tea and a lot of chatter  :)  My planned lunch date was cancelled.  The old friend who I was meeting up with had to cancel as, unfortunately, his dad was taken into hospital.  He obviously had to visit as the poor gent is very poorly.

I hope you've had no further problems with your electricity.  Did you find out what caused the black out?  You don't realise how much you depend on it until it's not there!

I'm completely stumped by your rebus.  You've definitely got your own back

My rebus is a record that was a hit when I was celebrating my 16th birthday.

Please use three consecutive letters from either one in picture two.  Please change the first letter of picture three and it's all on one line.

You need the rank of the gent on the far right of picture one and any one in picture two.

What's round and bad tempered?...A vicious circle.

I'm off for another wrestle with your rebus!

Your rebus kept me guessing for a while.  I was convinced the batter got a very fine edge on the ball and therefore I thought the word should be Nick.  After magnifying the picture several times I will have to concede you might be right.  I am surprised it is one of your favourite's - Rotten Tomatoes only gave it a score in the low forties.

Still, I am in a good mood.  The prodigal son surprised us by turning up to spend Easter with us and so the fatted calf is on the menu for tonight accompanied by one of his favourite d'Arenberg reds.

Hi Jack

Pleased to hear that Andrew's spending Easter with you - what a smashing surprise  :)  I'm a bit astonished that you haven't converted him to the sauv blanc way of thinking  >:D

The film is one that both Zoe and & I enjoy & you don't get many of those to the pound   It's very corny and tongue in cheek but Captain Kirk and Michael Caine are very funny and I've yet to find a bad film with Sandra Bullock in it, apart from the sequel which was a wash out.  Anyway I'm happy I kept you guessing for a little while!

I'm very sad as I watched the last of Darby and Joan last night.  I hope they'll make another series soon.

My offering today is another film I enjoy. It dates back to the 1990's. It fares slightly better on rotten tomatoes  ;D

Please re-arrange the letters of picture two. You need half of picture three expressed as a fraction*. Please change the second letter of picture four and lose the first and last letters of picture five.  Please pretend it's all on one line.

Time I wasn't here.  It's drizzling and not very nice so it might be lunch without the walk first  :(

*Sorry for any confusion.  Jack has spotted that it should be a fraction and not a decimal.

If you worked for about 30 years for The Halifax and left them about 20 years ago, you must have still been a teenager when you started work with them.  Did you always work at the same Branch in Bletchley or did you work in several Branches?

If that Boss knew you now, he would have to change his view, wouldn’t he?

I was sorry to hear about the decline of your city centre.

Hi Jack

I've had a busy Sunday morning.  I've made shepherds pie and been for a walk and just scoffed my tuna sarnie for lunch  ;D

You are right - I was just 19 when I joined the Halifax!  I spent the entire time at Bletchley branch (sadly now closed) although I did moonlight at the branch in Milton Keynes occasionally for a bit of extra money.  I've probably mentioned it before but I met Barbs when we both worked there.  We've been friends since before Zoe was born.  She's a fantastic friend :)  My sister once said that everybody should have a Barbara

Strangely I did bump into my old boss not that long ago.  He'd given a friend a lift into the hospital.  It was great to see him and catch up :)

Unfortunately, online shopping has contributed to the decline of our high streets.  I'm as guilty as the next man I'm afraid.  I don't enjoy shopping it's just a necessary evil for me.

My rebus today is another film.  Released about 20 odd years ago it's one of my favourites.

#4 12 (#3 + #4 + #2 + #3)

Please use the first three letters (of seven) of picture two. You need the character on the left in picture three and the first two letters of the first name of the gent in picture four. Picture five you're not interested in where it is but what.  Please use the last three letters.  Once homophone and please pretend it's all on one line.  You can substitute this for picture five if you like.  Though you probably wouldn't like

I was walking down the corridor at work the other day when I spotted a new sign which read "Thieves Operate Here"
I turned to one of my colleagues and said "wouldn't it be safer to leave it to the surgeons!"

Leave you with a daft joke  ;D

Sorry couldn't resist this  >:D

I am going to surprise you by constructing a rebus.

ET is on a roll.  What do you think?

Quote

Ditch the pink muck, take a stand,
Sauv. Blanc's the upgrade you deserve.

Hi Jack

To say I'm surprised would be understatement   I haven't had a Toblerone for years.  I wonder if they're still as good as they used to be.

ET is definitely on a roll.  I loved the latest effort  :)  Not wishing to detract from such a lovely piece, the town centre of Bletchley is, unfortunately, very sad and neglected now.  I had a lady at the door a couple of weeks ago from the Bletchley Park Residents Association.  She told me that our town is amongst the most run down in the country  :( In the 20 years since I left the Halifax it's gone downhill fast and many of the shops have closed.  My visitor told me that they had obtained a grant of several million pounds to try and rejuvenate the town centre. My only hope is that they spend it wisely.

Jan and Andy often walk Lucki round the Blue Lagoon. Bletchley Park is amazing and well worth a visit.  The canal runs through the park where Barbs and I walk. It's a very pretty area with lots of trees and a river as well. We set off for a walk again this morning.  It was cold and windy but sunny.  We'd only got halfway round our usual route when the heavens opened.  Not just nasty spiky rain but sleet as well  :o  We were soaked by the time we got back to hers.  Nothing a good cuppa couldn't put right

I completely forgot to say that I took your advice.  I opened a bottle of Sauv Blanc from your neighbours across the water last night.  Very good it is too.  Have saved half to enjoy this evening >:D

I'm expecting number one daughter in a little while.

**Ideas to Spice Up Your Leave**

Hi Jack

Having a lovely lazy Friday.  Been to see Barbs and had a walk - when it finally stopped raining!

I really enjoyed your clever poem - almost as much as the Interview With a Cat  >:D

I'm off to the Grumpy Cook on Monday.  Tuesday it's Miller & Carter in Shenley with an old friend for a steak  :-H and on Wednesday I'm meeting my old work friend Gill.  Venue to be decided!   So I have lots to look forward to.  Spookily we were only talking about The Stables at work earlier in the week.  Jane and her husband are going to see Richard Digance there next month.

I have to pop out in a little while so a quick and easy rebus today.  It's a fairly recent film.

Not only 2 Pickles but a Brian Bilston poem with a story of an unlikely coincidence.

I was looking for a Brian Bilston poem when I saw that he has a page on Facebook.  Below the above poem on Facebook, in a list of the people who liked it, was a good friend of ours from Canberra who June and I correspond with several times a year.  She lost her husband, who was also a very good friend, last year.  They both doted on their cat, Maggie, much as we do on Bonnie.  What a small world it is.

Hi Jack

I'm afraid I'm going to be a bit of a disappointment!  No big plans just some little diddly ones   I'm very much looking forward to not having to leap out of bed at 6.50 am and am meeting up with some old friends  :)

The Job Interview with a Cat is brilliant  ;)  Definitely my favourite so far by a country mile.  Apologies to Bonnie   It is a very small world.  What an amazing coincidence about your friend and Maggie  :)

My rebus today is a book from about 10 years ago.  It features two well loved characters but was not written by their original author.

Please change the first and third letters of picture one. You need three consecutive letters from picture two.  The title of either gent in picture three and again three consecutive letters.  Please change the third letter of picture four.  Please pretend it's all on one line.

A cowboy rode into town & stopped at a saloon for a drink.  Unfortunately, the locals had a habit of picking on strangers.  When he finished his drink & went outside he found his horse had been stolen.
He went back into the bar & tossed his gun into the air & niftily caught it above his head before firing a shot into the ceiling.  "Which one of you yokels stole my horse?" he shouted at the top of his voice.
Nobody answered.
"Alright I'm going to have another beer, & if my horse ain't back outside by the time I finish, I'm gonna do what I dun in Texas!  And I don't like to have to do what I dun in Texas!"
Some of the locals shifted uneasily.
True to his word the cowboy finished his beer & went outside where his horse had been returned to the post.  He saddled up & started to ride out of town.  The bartender wandered out of the bar & said "say partner before you go... what happened in Texas?"
The cowboy turned back & said "I had to walk home."

Leave you with a very naff joke  ;D  I'm off to do something useful like put the kettle on!

I have to say though, you come across as pretty sensitive. You’ll be giving Aussie rugby players a bad rep!

Any improvement has been the result of having a very good coach for the last sixty years.  June was always a one that could never resist a challenge.  Her friends told her I was too rough a diamond and she could never change me and moreover. any romance would not last a year.  She would be the first one to admit she still has a lot to do but I am grateful she is still trying.

Quote

I think you have a wicked sense of humour. :D

Hi Jack

I have to say that Madeleine's spot on.   In all these years I've known you, you've always been thoughtful, caring and sensitive to the feelings of others.  June's obviously a wonderful influence.

I really love Needles - clever and funny! Almost my favourite so far.  Also the Glove!  Like Moyra I'm enjoying Brian Bilston and no analysing required  ;D

It's a bit short and sweet from me as it's very hectic - just for a change   I'm very much looking forward to a few days off.

Hi Jack

Another very busy day.  I've only got to work tomorrow then I have a week off.  If you count my non-working days and Easter Monday I have 12 days to enjoy myself  :)  Loved the Pickles as usual but the first one made me laugh out loud   Hilarious.

A quick and easy rebus today.  It's a film that's nearly as old as I am!
6 (#1 + #4) 2 #3 #3

Please use three consecutive letters from the first picture.  Any one of picture four (8 letters) Please lose the first three and last two letters and then change the middle letter of what you've got left.  one homophone and position is vitally important.

A priest is walking down the street one day when he notices a very small boy trying to press a doorbell on a house across the street.
However, the boy is very small and the doorbell is too high for him to reach.
After watching the boys efforts for some time, the priest moves closer to the boy's position.
He steps smartly across the street, walks up behind the little fellow and, placing his hand kindly on the child's shoulder leans over and gives the doorbell a solid ring.
Crouching down to the child's level, the priest smiles benevolently and asks, "And now what young man?
To which the boy replies, "Now we run!

Only about an hour to go.  I'll leave you with a silly joke  ;D

The last two were challenging without being impossible.  I hope you still had fun.

Kylie has been telling you porkies.  I know Blue very well and he would never through a bottle at anyone, no matter what the provocation.

We watched the third episode of Signora Volpe last night.  Apparently Season 2 with another 3 episodes should be available soon and we are looking forward to that.

We watched the first episode of The Good Ship Murder while I was having a lunch of Gazpacho and dates today.  It is possibly a toss up whether we would watch another episode under any circumstances.  However, the only source I could find here was SBS-on-demand and that has three ad breaks in 45 minutes.  I hate ads.

Hi Jack

I'm having a hectically busy Monday.  Not much fun I have to say.

I did have fun compiling the rebuses but feel awful for besmirching Blue's name.  I didn't properly engage brain sorry.

I'm not sure when season two of Signora Volpe will be available here.  Ms Google just says Spring 2024.  I did warn you about Good Ship Murders - it's very naff

I hate ads too  :-R

Lunchtime thank heavens  :-H

It seems to me that Billy Collins is trying to convey the idea that poetry should be experienced and enjoyed rather than analysed and dissected.

I thought the idea was that we should see behind the words and build a picture of what poems mean to us so we can get full value out of them.  Does it matter if we go beyond what the poet originally intended?  I am confused.  What do you think?

Quote

But I believe that once they have shared their creation with the public, they should be prepared for everyone to appreciate it in any way they choose.

Hi Jack

I think Yvonne and yourself have summed it up perfectly.  If the poet is so precious that they don't want people to analyse their poem and enjoy it then why bother in the first place?

We've had yet more rain today  :-R  I nipped out for a walk when it stopped a little while ago.

My puzzle today is an expression I'm fond of.  Sorry if it's a repeat but i'm hoping it's different enough not to matter.

I bought a book called 'Do It Yourself Surgery'  When I opened it would you believe it...
The appendix was missing!

Kylie told me that her Aunty Sheila is a member of the Brisbane Women's Club.  Last weekend they were having a dinner and charity auction to raise money for worthy causes.  Sheila insisted that Blue should accompany her.  He, of course, would rather be down the pub with his mates on a Saturday night.  Unfortunately the speaker at the event didn't have an off switch.  He just rambled on and on, totally oblivious to his restless audience.  Eventually Blue couldn't stand it any longer and he picked up an empty wine bottle from the table and lobbed it in the general direction of the speaker.  It missed it's target and hit the chairwoman instead.  As she slid slowly to the floor she looked across at Blue and muttered "Hit me again - I can still hear him!"

Just spotted Pickles and Blue

Of course I watch Midsomer but it has really gone downhill since Tom left.

I've been waiting for you to pop up Linda  >:D  I'm going to have to delve back into Foyle as I haven't watched it for some time.

How right you are about Midsomer  :(  A real shame.  I always re-watch the earlier ones with Tom and rarely revisit the later ones with John.

I've got a ham and egg (bashed up with our favourite condiment!) sarnie with my name on it.  Should go down well with a cup of buildery tea  :-H
