I think the highest number of rosettes came in the beefsteak standard game a few years ago
(225 rosettes that day)

The first time in more than ten years of playing Chi that the Standard game has come up with a seed word that I'd never heard of.

I don't want to make a big issue of it, but we often talk about 'common' words being those familiar to well-read, educated native speakers of English. Most people who know anything of the history of the twentieth century will know the key points - two world wars, the fall of the European empires, the rise of the USA and the USSR as the world's two 'superpowers', the cold war and its conclusion.
'Glasnost' and 'perestroika' are as much a part of that as 'Blitzkrieg' and 'Gestapo' were of World War II

fatwa cost me a rosette yesterday, but I did make it to maven, so not all bad. I can't remember fatwa coming in a game before, but I think it is rightly classed as 'common'.

My rebus a few days ago was 'The Tragedy of Hamlet, Prince of Denmark'. Today's is a famous one-line quote from that play, in which Hamlet  gives in to a touch of misogyny;
Hamlet is not a very happy chappie.
Not only has Hamlet's own uncle murdered his father, but he has also married his widow, the queen, Hamlet's mother.

It wouldn't surprise me if its plural form encomia were also lurking somewhere in Chi's 'common' lexicon. A lot of these words have been around since the game started, they appear once in a blue moon and if no-one queries them, they remain until the next time.

Not quite the Shakespearean bloodfest that 'Hamlet' was, but this 1965 western had a pretty high body-count too.

I am with you on metadata.
I don't know much about IT, but I do know that when downloading a file there first has to be a metadata download describing to the receiver the data in that file.

Also annoyed with myself because I ignored my own rule - always look for anagrams!
I'd already played 'meaty'!!

That's what I missed.
I wouldn't care - last night, I watched an old episode of 'Endeavour'.
I heard Jim Strange refer to Morse as 'Matey' at least six times in the course of the episude!!

Grr and Double grrrr!

So, it looks like my run is going to end on 22 (25 for the month) = both personal bests. I have to go out now and the game will have closed by the time I get back.

Really looking forward to seeing what I missed.

COD doesn't show it as 'US', but it's certainly a new one on me.

Not a good day at the Chi Office for me yesterday - I'm afraid I got nowhere with either your or Pen's rebuses.
Never mind.
My offering today is quite simple - the full title of probably the most famous work in the entire corpus of EngLit.
