Words / word suggestion from the Challenge Puzzle 5 January
« on: January 09, 2021, 04:27:05 AM »
I would like to suggest 'anted,' as in: The poker players all anted up before play started. (I wrote this sentence, it is not a quote from any other source. After the 'beclad' incident, I'm terrified to suggest anything!)

Words / checking before suggesting
« on: January 05, 2021, 05:52:43 AM »
Dear Alan and Forumites,

I think I should know this already, but I don't:

If a player wants to suggest a word, I know that there's the Word List Suggestions page to check. But is there another 'master' list to check to see if the word in question has already been in- or ex-cluded?

For example, whenever I see 'true' as a possibility, I want to use 'trued' and/or 'truing', using true as a verb, meaning to adjust so as to make true. It's not on the Suggestions list, but I'm hesitant to suggest it in case I've failed to check some other list, and I'm just being annoying.

Whatever / Southern Sky
« on: March 17, 2014, 03:42:22 AM »
Dear Chi-folk:

We're getting on an airplane tomorrow and flying to New Zealand! I know it's not nearly as adventurous as GC's travel plan, but I'm excited anyway.

We'll be there about a month and will be driving around in a camper van. My husband, the Organized One, has created a provisional itinerary for us, but just thought I'd ask the more knowledgeable of you down there on the other side of the equator (and the International Date Line!): recommendations? I know there are too many beautiful and interesting possibilities to visit in a month and we have done our homework, but still: suggestions?

Ready to gaze at the southern sky,

Words / revisiting a suggestion
« on: November 18, 2013, 05:48:38 AM »

 ??? ??? ???
I have been thinking about the word 'stent.' I think it is currently a 'rare' word. Back in 2009, a suggestion was made to reclassify it as 'common.' I could not find a ruling on this. I apologize if I have missed any further discussion or a decision, and would like to know what others think.
??? ??? ???

Thanks,

Dear Alan:

I cannot locate the '10-letter' tab, nor do I see a full screen option as described in your 'Chi upgraded' post.

Any suggestions?

Dear Forum Friends:

For anyone wishing to contribute to disaster relief for Queenslanders, the Premier's Disaster Relief Appeal has a website that makes it simple and secure to donate online. So far, over $200,000,000 has been raised.

Dear Forum Friends:

Just wanted to mention that my profile now includes the word retired! My plans: to see what my home is like in the daylight on a weekday! Perhaps I'll be able to join the forum conversation more often now.

cheers,

Words / re: Saturday, Sept 24 Challenge
« on: September 26, 2010, 10:30:36 AM »
Dear Alan:

I was surprised to find 'vise' accepted as a rare word. To me, this is a common word meaning, 'a clamping device, usually consisting of two jaws closed or opened by a screw or lever, used in carpentry or metalworking to hold a piece in position.'
I understand that the British spelling is 'vice', but are there not quite a few chi words with alternate American/British spellings (-re/-er; -our/-or; etc.) that share 'common' status?
What is your thinking on this?

All best wishes,

Petra @ nineoaks

Words / disallowed term Wednesday (5-5-10) Challenge
« on: May 05, 2010, 11:40:38 AM »
Dear Forumites:

Is the term 'relo' a common one anywhere but in the US? It's real estate agent talk for 'relocation' and fairly common here.

Dear All:

What do others think of 'minimart' as an acceptable word for today's standard puzzle?

All best wishes,
