I'm an American with a British father, and I like to think I have a pretty extensive vocabulary.  I've never heard this term.

I wish I could set up a debate between you and Tom (from Australia, not Tom44) who has frequently expressed his displeasure that words well known throughout the Commonwealth are classed as rare merely because they are little known in the US. He, and other forumites, are firmly convinced that the common word list has an American bias.

And here's me thinking it has an Australian bias!  Crikey.

If you grew up reading Asterix, dolmen is a pretty common word.   :)

Yes!  You already say skedule!  And soon all you olds will be gone and your youths won't know any different pronunciations even ever existed, and will be talking just like Yanks!  We're everywhere!!  We're ubiquitous!  We rule the world!  U-S-A!  MERKA!!

I do hope no one is worrying too much about posting that stuff.  It's deleted, thank you for doing that, don't worry about it any more.  It isn't personal.  Actually I barely know who first posted any of the jokes in question.

You have to be pretty thick skinned to be on the Internet.

@Les303, the tulips picture was really incredible.

I, of course, bow to that decision.

I see what you did there.

For what it's worth I think it's a common word.

I have no problem with risqué jokes.  In fact, I am a fan unless they cross the line to become demeaning to women at which time, even if considered funny, I believe they are unacceptable and make me uncomfortable being in any way associated with them.  I believe parts of two of Les’s recent jokes are demeaning to women.

I thought several of the jokes were offensive and unfunny.  Not to the extent I'd want to try to be a censor about it, but yes, they're vulgar and cheap in my view.  Leaning heavily on tired old tropes about women existing to serve as sexual favors and men thinking putting a hand on someone else's body is "just a bit of good fun."  Too many men think it isn't so far fetched to think grabbing a woman's breasts is part of a joke and not an assault.

G'day John, thanks for satisfying our curiosity & confirming the brilliant detective skills of Rose.

I think that to come up with a rhyme for Melbourne I would need a few days relaxing in a resort town like Shelburne however my cashflow is rather poor at the moment so I am afraid that I would have no hope of coming with anything that even remotely sounds like a rhyme for Glasgow.

Cheers Les

You're right, these are hard.

Hey now, the challenge is in making sure you get every word, even the hyper-rare ones, even though the list of what is and isn't allowed changes constantly --- AND getting a hit rate of 100 nearly every single time!

I mean, I'm sure it's a challenge making sure the program you use keeps up with the lists concentrating like that every day.

Does anyone else think it's odd that osier is classified as common while orate is classified as rare?

Sorry mate, but I meant to ask you how you went with the other 3 questions?

I just did the maths question again & still came up with 5000 ?

I think you might be talking to me, Les?  if so:

On the first question I said "second."
On the second question I said "second to last," because the question tells you that you do overtake the last person.  I studied philosophy and logic in university, and we tend to accept the premises of a question.  We don't care about whether it's possible or not!  :)
On the last question I said "Mary."
