Then why did only 76 of the 370 million play the word?

 ;D ;D

Sheer laziness.

If they made it into American English, they must be common!  370 million people can't be wrong!

The trick is to undercook the onions. Everybody is going to get to know each other in the pot.

It's amazing how lifelike they can make computer-written ad speech sound these days

I find I have to take the time to edit every item I eat when I'm tied to a diet - every mite that the tide may emit.
That's a good one.

One way to help remember these things is to create a mnemonic.  For example, I have the sentence, "the saint put a stain on the satin."

Coming up with memorable sentences with interesting images (just how did the saint stain the satin??) helps.

You might imagine a sleepy police officer whose siren got stuck in a pine tree.  He says to himself, "once I have risen, I will rinse the resin from my siren."

Ha!  I can!

Any offence caused by my yelling "Ha! I can!" was UNMEANT.

Speaking of anagrams there were 3 9-letters to get in that puzzle.  I got CALUMNIED immediately and never did see UNCLAIMED.

I would say there is no reason for it to be common.  Some plurals are words but not common.  Just because a word is common doesn't mean all its forms automatically are.  For example, nova and novae.

Never heard of it, but I might start using it as an insult.  Be quiet, ya jerkwater!  So American.

I got schmo, but I never get a rosette or a trophy, so my triumph was probably based solely on the fact that I'm a schmo and so knew the word.

The Fawlty Towers game!  I love it!  Well spotted.

The January 15 puzzled struck a note with me.  Considering the Putin-approved president of the US is continuing his master's bidding by shutting down the day to day functions and finances of the US government, I thought it was apt that you can't arbitrate with an irate brat.

One day, I too will be proud to boast that I once got a rosette.  Until then, I'll be here, plodding along to "good" and "better" and the occasional "best."
