I’ve only ever used or read the word urethane as a noun, never as a verb. I can see where you are coming from though, because we have verbified paint, varnish, whitewash, lacquer, oil etc etc. Have you found any dictionaries showing urethane as verb?

I'm not suggesting making a verb of urethane — my suggestion is akin to painting, varnishing, whitewashing, lacquering, oiling, etc.: the act of applying the substance (a noun).

sorry, urethaning is applying a coat of urethane to a surface (usually wood or metal) for protection.

Agree, s in the middle is not my favourite. But my bête noire letter is Y.

My wife agrees — she hates seeing a Y.

As long as we're sharing what we dislike in puzzles ... my bête noire is puzzles with only one S and it is the required letter.

I have no idea why, but usually the nine-letter word jumps out at me within a few seconds. But I may not play it immediately. I work semi-alphabetically — if the nine-letter word is pirouette, I try to get all words which start with 'e', then all words which start with 'o', then all words which start with 'p' and I'll play the nine-letter word then (unless I get distracted by other words. But I don't work strictly alphabetically: when I get a common word which has anagrams which are also common words, I play those immediately, outside the alphabetical order.

Don't know if that description makes sense — or if my process seems too strange!

It was the first word I thought of on the unearthing / unhearting game!  ;D

Its meaning should be obvious.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Up_on_the_Housetop (widely known secular Christmas song)

Psalm 102:7*
the following translations use the word housetop:
English Standard Version
Berean Standard Bible
New King James Version
New American Standard Bible
NASB 1995
NASB 1977
Amplified Bible
Douay-Rheims Bible
English Revised Version
Good News Translation
JPS Tanakh 1917
Majority Standard Bible
New Revised Standard Version
New Heart English Bible
World English Bible

The American Standard Version uses house-top (hyphenated).

The Authorised Version (aka King James Version) and Webster's Bible Translation use house top (two words, no  hyphen)

* Eastern Christians use the traditional Christian numbering which regards this verse as Psalm 101:8. Most Western Christians have adopted the Jewish numbering and see this as Psalm 102:7

******

(I have no position as to whether housetop should be classified as common in Chihuahua.)

I can't remember a seed word that drove me nuts, though there certainly have been some. What really makes me cross with myself is when I am only a word or two short of a rosette and the missingword/s turn out to be very ordinary everyday 4 or 5 letter words.

I refer to those as 'stupid easy words' — and if I could eliminate the times when I miss the stupid easy words (frequently), not only would my results be a lot better, but the time spent would be more reasonable (a lot less)!

Whatever / Re: How did you start playing Chihuahua?
« on: September 20, 2023, 01:20:12 PM »
Given the players on Chihuahua come from all around the world, I’m interested to know how players first found the game? After all, it has much earlier beginnings than say Wordle or the like. When I search “free word games online”, Chihuahua doesn’t come up (well not that I can see in the first few responses).

Actually, I think* I originally found Chihuahua with the DuckDuckGo search engine, played it some sporadically for awhile, gradually begain playing regularly and eventually registered a player name.

* 16+ years is far too long for my feeble memory to be sure of what really happened!

It's not totally surprising people had differing views on how common this word is. According to the News on the Web corpus, it's much more frequently used in New Zealand, Australia and Canada than in the UK, US or Ireland:

That strikes me as an unusual alignment, especially for Canada.

I've never heard or encountered (AFAIK) teakettle used in that way.

I asked my better half (who is the tea drinker in the house) who said definitely two words. She uses the kettle several times a day. If I want hot water, I nuke it, but she swears it doesn't taste the same.

Definitely not common, IMNSHO.
(this is the first time I've encountered the word.)
Mozarella balls seems much more straight-forward.
