The Daily Quest / gatecrash???
« on: December 03, 2010, 11:04:05 AM »
I don't think I've ever encountered this -- especially not as a single word. I would expect gate crasher or gate crashing (the forms with which I am more familiar) to be two separate words, possibly with a hyphen instead of a space between them.

Whatever / Re: 'Haitch' or 'aitch'? How do you pronounce 'H'?
« on: November 29, 2010, 01:56:55 AM »
I am totaly accentless, smaug!!  >:D
In the U.S., the national news anchors are supposed to be without an accent. But to those from the southern U.S., they sound like 'Yankees'. I think everyone has an accent of some sort: it all depends on one's perspective.

My experience is that U.S. people, save mariners, tend to pronounce buoy as 'boo - ee', but mariners tend to pronounce it 'boy'.

Words / afternoon / evening

When does afternoon end and evening begin? (Obviously, this is a request for opinions and is probably affected by region.)

We're having a wonderful day here in the Chicago area  :P -- temperature holding around freezing, windy (gusts about 30 mph) with ice pellets (sleet), rain, and mist with a chance of snow.

One problem with scholars is that they tend to be very knowledgeable in a narrow field, but not know much about the rest of the world.  Specialists vs. generalists!
A very deep, but narrow rut -- it is difficult to get out of such.

A reading suggestion - 'Fillets of Plaice' by the naturalist and humourist Gerald Durrell (best known for 'My Family and Other Animals')-this is a wonderful collection of animal-related short stories. Probably still in print, and almost certainly available in a good public library.
I very rarely read fiction, but I borrowed a copy of the book from my public library (they didn't have a copy, but they have a wonderful InterLibrary Loan system and obtained it from another library). Durrell certainly likes to use adjectives! Personally, I find all the adjectives (i.e., flowery language) a distraction (not sure why), and wasn't able to 'get into' the book. But someone who enjoys fiction might find it enjoyable.

Words / Re: Common word status for Standard game Nov 18
« on: November 20, 2010, 03:35:33 AM »
I completely agree with Tom on both those words. The only reason I got fernier on the Standard puzzle of 18 November was because I missed it on the Challenge puzzle of 17 November but looked at the solution!

The word confrere is one of those words I know, but rarely see and never use. I didn't get it and do think it would be better excluded from the common word list.

I tried freon, expecting it to be rejected because it is, after all, a trademarked brand name that ought to be capitalised. (Perhaps in some English-speaking lands it has become a genericized trademark.*) I was surprised when it was accepted. I didn't try refire or refired. I did get froe, but expected it to be considered rare.

* How do you insert a hyperlink (as I've seen Alan do) where only text identifying the link is seen and not the whole http.... thing in a post on this forum? -- Thanks, anonsi!!! (I fixed it above.)   ;D

And from the 18 November puzzle, another missing Bible word: rideth.

There is a wonderful book on training canines called "The Monks of New Skete".  Highly recommended.
The Monks of New Skete (located in Cambridge, New York, USA) have three books of which I know:
  • The Art of Raising a Puppy
  • How to Be Your Dog's Best Friend
  • Divine Canine: The Monks' Way to a Happy, Obedient Dog

Are you thinking of skeet shooting?  I haven't seen the other spelling.

From http://encyclopedia.thefreedictionary.com/skete (there is more than what I've copied here)
Quote
A skete is a group of hermits following a monastic  rule, allowing them to worship  in comparative solitude, while also affording them a level of mutual practical support and security.

A skete usually has a common area of worship (a church or a chapel), with individual hermitages, or small houses for a small number of monks or nuns.

The word fearest is in the Bible, as you thought. The other two are comparative forms of fake.

T, I think you need to explain your use of 'Viral' to a newcomer.

The following words were not allowed in yesterday's Challenge puzzle. I think they should be added.
  • skete
  • fearest
  • fakiest
  • fakest

Plaice and chips!!  Yum!!

I don't eat dead flesh.  >:D

But I think I know a fair number of fish species that people-who-eat-that-kind-of-stuff eat. I've heard of dace, but not tench or ling (except for Chihuahua) or plaice.

And another fish classified as common which I had not previously encountered: plaice. I've seen ling enough times here that I look for it, but I've never seen it elsewhere. Why are these (obscure to me) fishes deemed common?
