Words / word suggestion: ansible
« on: January 22, 2020, 10:14:37 AM »
The word ansible is a common device in science fiction. It even makes the OED which defines it thus:

Quote
In science fiction: a device that enables instantaneous communication over any distance. Also: this as a form of communication.

The OED has usage going back to 1966 which jibes with the Wikipedia article.

Words / inconsistent antelopes?
« on: January 19, 2020, 01:13:50 PM »
I thought someone might have mentioned this by now, but ....

Some time back, one African antelope was demoted from common to rare and yet a much less-used antelope (referring to word frequency; I have no idea which species is more common) recently appeared as a seed word. According to the Ngram Viewer, eland has been consistently twice (or more) used than springbok.

Words / massy — is it really common?
« on: January 08, 2020, 11:40:37 AM »
This kept me from a rosette and it isn't one which resulted in a 'duh'. The three least-played 'common' words: mislay (226), missal (219), and massy (125). And massy gets a red squiggly underline in this browser. Surely a candidate for a downgrade?

Whatever / schnitzel game
« on: November 11, 2019, 10:58:16 AM »
The available letters allowed making Schlitz which at one time was known as 'The beer that made Milwaukee famous'. In university days, it was semi-popular because it was cheap, but its nickname was the removal of the L from its name, probably due to the changes made about that time in ingredients and brewing process! The puzzle brought back memories.

Words / word suggestion

I don't think is a spoiler, but have left the word off the subject just in case. I've forgot to make this suggestion many times — memory like a sieve. The suggestion is cuban. It is a type of sandwich which is very popular in south Florida (where I grew up).

Word Games / most words beginning with required letter
« on: September 25, 2019, 07:38:16 AM »
IIRC, there was a post (could not find it) which said the in most Chihuahua puzzles, the majority of the (common only?) words started with the required letter. I believe Alan confirmed this to be true. I was wondering if this were true with the letters A E I J K N O Q U V X Z (especially the vowels)?

Whatever / Challenge game brings flashback
« on: September 21, 2019, 06:47:52 AM »
It isn't recognised as a word, so this isn't a spoiler.

In a previous lifetime, I worked as an air traffic controller. One of the shifts was called a daymid. A typical work schedule was
Day 1: 1600-0000
Day 2: 1300-2100
Day 3: 1000-1800
Day 4: 0700-1500
Day 5: 0000-0800

The last two were referred to as a daymid. They were difficult. The only positive thing about them was having 80 hours off or 56 hours off (alternating each week) before returning to work.

Despite a very large number of studies which show shift workers need to be kept on a steady shift, despite the requirements for air traffic controllers to meet the same physical standards as pilots, despite requirements for pilots to have a minimum rest period of 10 hours, with the opportunity for at least 8 uninterrupted sleep hours, the Federal Aviation Administration allowed this as a normal schedule. And because every other week, the schedule was move up 24 hours, a controller would, in a 14 week period work all 24 hours all 7 days (forget about making a regular commitment (e.g. coaching youth sports, taking a college course, regularly making meetings of an organisation, etc.).

I hated the work schedule. And when I asked a supervisor why we worked such a 'stupid schedule', I got one of the all-time worst responses that can be given: 'that's the way we've always done it'!

Anyway, that was the flashback prompted by the letters in the puzzle.

Words / lambent is common??
« on: July 16, 2019, 06:36:40 AM »
By far the least played 'common' word. The next least played common word (batsmen) was played by more than 45% more players. Surely a candidate for demotion?

I imagine the word came into use after the original word list was created, but I see it almost every day. The OED added it in 2014.
