Whatever / Cultural illiteracy at the BBC

Quote
Police said an explosion erupted as two attackers tried to enter the church on Palm Sunday, the first day of Easter.

Appalling. I expected better from the BBC.

Words / enamor/enamour/enamored/enamoured
« on: January 25, 2021, 03:41:52 AM »
Is there a reason enamor was a rare word whilst enamored was common? I would expect them to be the same along with enamour and enamoured.

The Daily Quest / Standard Puzzle for Friday 22 January 2021
« on: January 23, 2021, 07:47:09 AM »
I don't think I've seen such an extreme bar graph at the bottom of the Scoreboard with rare words not shown: exponential growth from fewest to most common words found. And the huge number of rosettes reflects it. Good show to all who played.

Words / word suggestion: covid

Might this be a candidate for adding to the word list?

Words / sandcastle versus sand castle
« on: December 24, 2020, 04:25:11 AM »
The other day sandcastle was the seed word. I would spell it as two words. Despite the observation that American English is more likely to combine separate words into a compound word, it appears in this case British English has a strong preference for a single compound word whereas American English has a slight preference for two separate words.

Words / word suggestion: doxing
« on: December 08, 2020, 09:32:13 AM »
Although the root, dox, is too short, doxing, doxed, and perhaps doxes should be allowed, IMO. I suspect the word is too new for the original word list, but it has become (unfortunately) commonplace today.

Words / Word suggestion: titsup
« on: October 21, 2020, 09:32:05 AM »
It is an anagram from the military pronounced as a word: total inability to support usual performance.

Words / monism / monist
« on: April 18, 2020, 11:57:16 PM »
In the Standard Puzzle for Friday 17 April 2020, monism was rare, monist was common. Should they not be the same?

Word Games / Change in drop-down menu?
« on: April 09, 2020, 02:59:08 AM »
Unless worsening eyesight and/or dotage are overtaking me faster than I realise, it seems the drop-down menu above the playable words has been given a larger font. Alan, please tell me you enlarged the menu.

Words / chaebol
« on: April 08, 2020, 03:05:20 AM »
Suggested addition: chaebol

I often encounter the word in business stories involving companies in South Korea. The Ngram Viewer shows this word started taking off in the late 1970s.

Whatever / Coronavirus & COVID-19

Illinois has ordered everyone to stay inside save for non-essentials.

Why do days seem longer staying indoors all day??

At least the grey has been temporarily replaced with white (snow).

The Daily Quest / Anagram delight
« on: February 26, 2020, 09:33:50 AM »
The Challenge puzzle for Wednesday 26 February 2020 is a delight for those who remember common anagrams. By my calculation, just playing the common words which have common word anagrams accounts for 26 of the 41 common words (63.4%).

Words / Dictionary of connotations?
« on: February 06, 2020, 08:51:19 AM »
Okay, word-meisters: is anyone aware of a dictionary which, instead or in addition to giving definitions, provides connotations and nuances?

I haven't found any evidence in web searches and realise it would be a huge task to compile such a reference. But perhaps someone here might know of something?
