The Daily Quest / Standard puzzle for Friday the 13th
« on: May 14, 2011, 10:37:41 AM »
The word summa was not common (okay), but summat is ? ? ?

Free Dictionary's definition of summat labels it 'Brit not standard'. I don't think it would be familiar to those in North America.

There have been several words the past few days. I hope they are not for currently active puzzles, but with the staggered times, they rather run together.

TRAPEZIUM -- the nine letter 'common' word: is it really all that common?

lended -- not allowed at all. It is non-standard per most dictionaries, but other non-standard words are allowed.

chanties (as in sea chanties) -- not allowed though it is a fairly common spelling in my experience.

Methinks there were one or two others, but senility ....

The Daily Quest / Monday (2011-04-11)
« on: April 11, 2011, 09:38:10 AM »
It seems the server for the game has changed time zones? Based on the time remaining for Sunday's game, it appears Monday's game will begin 30 minutes later than usual.

The Daily Quest / Heuristic -- really?
« on: February 23, 2011, 11:16:46 AM »
As an IT person who deals with security, heuristic is not terribly strange, but I wonder how common it is for non-IT people.

What percentage of people got it, Alan? And what is the typical percentage of players who get the nine-letter word?

Words / Another Bible word
« on: February 22, 2011, 11:33:53 AM »
The word buildest [Deuteronomy 22:8] was not accepted in yesterday's puzzle.  :(

I didn't even notice that, enisform. Apparently, an '8' followed by a close parenthesis creates that Cool Joe symbol. (I fixed it.)

Words / borsch?

I knew borscht could be spelt without a c, but I never knew it could be spelt without a t — and that spelling is common?

Words / cancelled versus canceled
« on: February 06, 2011, 05:00:55 AM »
I have no idea how to determine this, but am confident our Word-Meister Alan can.

Traditionally, American English does not double the ell (I seem to vaguely recall some rule about non-stressed syllable?) and thus spells it canceled (which looks strange to me), whilst the rest of the English-speaking world doubles the ell and spells it cancelled.

But I have the impression there is a growing trend in the U.S. to use the cancelled spelling. I've noticed on news stories about flight cancellations due to weather, that the obligatory camera shot of the monitor showing the status of flights the doubled-ell spelling seems more common than it used to be. And I came across an observation at Is it canceled or cancelled? which seems to bear this out.

An interesting web site which automatically compares Google search results, shows the double-ell cancelled is almost twice as popular as the single-ell form: cancelled VS. canceled

Do other Americans see this trend as well?

Whatever / Any Chi members living in the Carins - Townsville, QLD area?

I sure hope not. The pictures of the damage done by Cyclone Yasi are terrible.

Queensland sure has had a terrible streak of horrible weather.

Word Games / Suggestion for enhancement
« on: January 16, 2011, 05:05:15 AM »
I was thinking that it would be nice if there were displayed the actual percentage of common words that one has found and entered. Perhaps displayed over the pie chart which currently gives a visual display of one's progress, but not the actual percentage? Just a thought.

The Daily Quest / aconite is common?

I looked up aconite to find it is a perennial herb. But I've never heard of it. Is it endemic to Australia?

It seems that, like re- words, most -ish words aren't accepted.  :(
