Words / Sheeple
« on: June 30, 2022, 08:53:45 PM »
Definition of sheeple from Merriam-Webster

informal
: people who are docile, compliant, or easily influenced : people likened to sheep.

A suggestion for inclusion.

Words / Barcarole/barcarolle
« on: June 09, 2022, 12:45:49 AM »
In yesterday's 7-by-many, barcarole was common while barcarolle was rare. I think this is the wrong way round.

Words / Cisticola
« on: June 04, 2022, 05:45:55 PM »
Now Alan has clarified the position regarding suggesting words for inclusion, I'd like to propose cisticola. I thought I'd found a rare word using all the letters in the socialist puzzle - indeed I had found a rare word but wasn't surprised that it was rejected. Cisticolas, of which there are many species, are small warblers.

Strangely, although the word is actually in my electronic Oxford dictionary (which contains far fewer words than a printed dictionary) it's not in my Shorter Oxford. Nevertheless it's a 'proper' word even if largely only known to birdy people.

I'd be interested to know what you Aussies think of your new prime minister.

Words / Localise/socialise
« on: May 02, 2022, 05:37:42 PM »
I'm wondering why in yesterday's 7-by-many localise was classed as common while socialise was classed as rare. Having played socialise first I thought it may be because of the spelling with an 's' but both words are spelt that way. I think both words should be common.

Words / Athwart

Is athwart really a common word? Yes, 50 people got it, but 296 didn't.

Word Games / Wordle
« on: January 11, 2022, 08:35:29 PM »
I've just found a new word game that might be of interest to Chi players. Starting from scratch you have 6 goes to get the word, a sort of word hangman. There's only one game a day so you won't spend hours on it.

Words / Fannying
« on: January 10, 2022, 08:40:16 PM »
I don't know what the word fanny means in Australia or other countries, but the British meaning is completely different from the American meaning, ours being, I would suggest, somewhat more vulgar.

Nevertheless the word is also used as a verb over here, most often in the expression fannying about, meaning to generally mess about uselessly - faffing about in other words. The Urban Dictionary gives a succinct definition of "To mess about, to waste time on needless activities, largely resulting in a commendable achievment of f*** all. Often causing lateness". (My redaction, to save offence, even though everyone knows full well what it means!)

I would like to suggest fannying for inclusion.

Word Games / Sensitivity
« on: November 26, 2021, 05:02:01 AM »
Has the sensitivity of tapping on a letter changed? For example, in this evening's Challenge game, where the central letter is R, every time I tap on a letter, however lightly, it submits the 'word' and I get an error saying either 'Must use the R' or, if R is pressed, 'Word must have at least four letters'. I'm getting an error message practically every time I hit a letter although an unexpected 'benefit' is that if I play what turns out to be a word (a rare word unknown to me) it submits it.

It's making the game unplayable on my Samsung tablet, especially as it doesn't respond to using the virtual keyboard (which it never has).

Words / Alcopop
« on: November 22, 2021, 06:43:35 PM »
A word that was probably invented long after the original list of Chi words was created. Although the word has never been suggested it was  mentioned in a thread where someone asked for alco to be included (request denied). It would appear from that thread that the word is known in Australia and it's certainly well known here in the UK, but whether it's well known enough everywhere to warrant common status I wouldn't like to say. I think it definitely warrants inclusion though.

Words / Capisce
« on: October 29, 2021, 05:56:15 PM »
I'm wondering if capisce might be considered for inclusion. I know it's an Italian word but given that words like senor and signor are accepted, it would appear that 'foreignness' shouldn't necessarily rule it out. It's in some of the online dictionaries.

Words / Saltator
« on: October 26, 2021, 05:51:46 PM »
Rejected by the translator puzzle. Saltators are birds in the tanager family, quite common in central and south America.

Words / Username
« on: October 11, 2021, 06:35:14 PM »
Rejected by the surname puzzle. I suspect that these days it's written as a single word more often than as two words. I'd even go so far as to suggest it should be classed as a common word.

Words / Inspissant
« on: October 02, 2021, 02:42:48 AM »
Can be a noun or an adjective (rejected by the pantsuit puzzle). Suitable for inclusion?

Words / Rude word suggestion
« on: August 25, 2021, 04:59:35 AM »
I probably wasn't the only one to try asswipe in the swampiest puzzle, but may be the only one willing to suggest its inclusion as a rare word, given the absence of Chi's prissiness in accepting such words.
