Whatever / Re: FACEBOOK
« on: May 19, 2013, 10:48:15 AM »
There seem to be significant differences between the way younger and older people use Facebook.  I use it to keep in touch with a relatively small number of friends who now live interstate or overseas, former colleagues and former students of mine (which I think was the original intent).  Many young people seem to have literally hundreds of 'friends' and seem much more comfortable with the commercial aspects of Facebook.  Personally, I choose to ignore the advertising, just as I choose to ignore the advertising in newspapers, on commercial TV stations and on other websites.  I think it still has value as a communication tool, despite having been hijacked by commerce.

And you thought I was crazy for keeping a tally of my rosettes!

Actually, I must admit to having Chi dreams too, though not as bizarre as yours.  I've dreamt words, usually when I'm one short of a rosette.  Never the right ones, though.  :)

Yes, I can see your rationale, MK.  It seems to be an unwritten rule in Chi that if one form of the word meets the criteria but another form doesn't, then it doesn't count.  I still think it's an anomaly - one of many!  :)

Words / Odds and evens
« on: April 24, 2013, 06:37:33 PM »
I tried evens in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle (meaning even money odds in betting parlance).  I was surprised.  In that context, it's neither a plural nor a verb form ending in 's', so shouldn't it count?

It's a bit like odds, which counts as a common word.

Words / Re: missing word - polonies?

In Australia we have at least three different names for that particular product.  In the West (where I come from) we call it polony, but in other states it gets called devon or fritz.  Whatever you call it, it's still awful!  :D

I was afraid people would say that.  I suspect I'm beyond help.  :P

Word Games / Counting rosettes
« on: April 11, 2013, 10:57:27 PM »
Since the beginning of this year, I've been keeping a tally of my rosettes (yes, I really am that obsessed with the game!)  I often wonder how my tally compares with other players.  Keeping an eye on the scoreboard gives you a broad idea of who's getting them and how often, but even so, it would be nice to know some actual numbers.  I wonder if it would be possible to include a cumulative rosette tally for each of the three versions of the game.  Are other people interested in rosette tallies or should I seek professional help for my obsession?   :P

Word Games / Re: Frustration Central... and then some!
« on: April 08, 2013, 10:05:42 PM »
I think we all experience frustration at times over what's deemed to be common and what's deemed to be rare (the forum is full of debates over these).  However, if you eliminate the distinction, it would detract from the skill of the game in my view.  Having a reward for finding all the common words recognises those who actually know a lot of words and are able to spot them in the puzzle.  If you have the time and the energy, you can lift your score significantly by simply trying lots of combinations of letters.  Inevitably, some of them will turn out to be words.

So, despite the frustrations, I'd rather keep things the way they are.

Happy birthday from me too, Alan.  May you have many, many more!

I love the idea of tyromancy - divining through the coagulation of cheese.  Evidently, the cheesemakers truly are blessed!

Words / mopily

If mopy and mopey are both acceptable words (as they were in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle) why not mopily?

Mopily yours
Morbius  :(

Whatever / Re: Rosettes
« on: March 24, 2013, 02:03:52 PM »
I reckon it's been a much tougher month for rosettes than last month across all three games.  There have been quite a few 10 letter puzzles where only a handful of people got a rosette.  I've only managed about half as many as I did in February.

I was somewhat surprised that these two words were classified as rare in the Challenge puzzle a couple of days back (the HISTAMINE game).  Both are pretty common, I'd have thought.

I suspect the verb 'to dack' is an Australianism.  Do other people call trousers dacks?  I'd support it being included as a rare word.  Dacks too, if not already allowed (same deal as for pants and tongs - a seeming plural that isn't.)

I tried that too.  I agree it should be allowed in Chi, at least as a rare word.
