Words / Re: Lycra? lycra?
« on: May 05, 2014, 08:38:03 PM »
I suggested that both lycra and mylar be upgraded to common a few months back, and Alan agreed with me on lycra but not on mylar.  I must admit, I didn't realise it was a trademark at the time.  The fact that it's been recently scrutinised by Alan and not only allowed but upgraded would indicate to me that it's considered to be one of those words that has made the transition from trademark to generic term.

Ensiform, I don't know if it's a regional thing, but Australian students certainly do say 'biol'.

MK, I'd agree that 'chem' is also consistent with the precedent set by including 'econ', but not the others you mention, because people don't actually say 'phys' or 'hist' or 'geog'.  They're only written abbreviations.  People do say 'chem', however (at least they do here in Australia).

A little while back, the word econ (a contraction of economics) was added to the list of acceptable words after a suggestion from (I think) Tom44.  In the same vein, I tried biol in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle, but it was rejected.  I'd suggest that biol is as widely known as econ and should also be added.

I'm familiar with both words because I have an interest in books and book collecting, but I'd concede that they're not words in common usage.  Nonetheless, I think they conform with Alan's definition of common words (i.e. words that would be known to an educated native English speaker).

Words / Portiere

My congratulations to the small number of people who managed to get a rosette in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle, all of whom obviously got the word portiere.  Alas, I was one of the many who didn't get it.  Is portiere really a common word?  I've never heard it before.

Say Hello / Re: Happy Birthday, rhino!!!
« on: March 08, 2014, 06:48:30 PM »
Happy birthday Rhino.  To celebrate, here's the only rhino joke I know (younger people probably won't get it, though).

A young woman goes to a fancy dress party with an animal theme - everyone is dressed as an animal.  A young man dressed as a rhinoceros approaches her and says "Hi, my name's Neil.  Would you like to dance?"  She gapes at him and promptly faints.  A crowd soon gathers around her concerned for her welfare, but she soon regains consciousness.  Her friend says "Are you OK?  What made you faint?" to which she replies "You'd faint too if you'd just been asked to dance by Rhino Neil!"  ;D

Yes, congratulations birdy!  I think it's important that we celebrate our personal milestones.  :D

I agree that summons should be allowed in Chi, but I'm not so sure about trappings.  When we talk about 'the trappings of office' for example, aren't we referring to more than one thing?  To me, that implies plurality.

Ah yes, of course.  I should really pay more attention.

I'm surpised it came up again so quickly, albeit in the standard puzzle this time.  I'm also surprised that I didn't get it, after initiating the discussion in January.  No wait... I'm not surprised by that at all!

Words / Re: Nite (and variants)
« on: February 20, 2014, 06:51:20 PM »
I've only ever seen them (nite and lite included) in advertising and marketing material where they're deliberately misspelt for effect.  Hence my contention that they're not legitimate spellings.

Words / Nite (and variants)
« on: February 15, 2014, 10:13:33 AM »
Given that nite is accepted in Chi as an informal spelling of night, I was a bit surpised that midnite wasn't accepted in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  It seems logical to me that, if nite is acceptable, then its variants (midnite, tonite etc.) should also be acceptable.

To be honest, I don't like seeing words like nite and lite in Chi.  As far as I'm concerned, they are not legitimate spellings.  However, I accept (grudgingly) that they have become part of the language.

Litotes was listed as a common word in yesterday's standard puzzle - a candidate for downgrading in my view.

This was listed as a common word in yesterday's standard puzzle.  I question its commonness.
