Words / Portiere
« on: April 24, 2014, 10:03:36 PM »
My congratulations to the small number of people who managed to get a rosette in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle, all of whom obviously got the word portiere.  Alas, I was one of the many who didn't get it.  Is portiere really a common word?  I've never heard it before.

Words / Nite (and variants)
« on: February 15, 2014, 10:13:33 AM »
Given that nite is accepted in Chi as an informal spelling of night, I was a bit surpised that midnite wasn't accepted in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  It seems logical to me that, if nite is acceptable, then its variants (midnite, tonite etc.) should also be acceptable.

To be honest, I don't like seeing words like nite and lite in Chi.  As far as I'm concerned, they are not legitimate spellings.  However, I accept (grudgingly) that they have become part of the language.

Words / litotes

Litotes was listed as a common word in yesterday's standard puzzle - a candidate for downgrading in my view.

This was listed as a common word in yesterday's standard puzzle.  I question its commonness.

Word Games / A new record?
« on: January 06, 2014, 07:00:28 PM »
Yesterday's 10-letter puzzle (GUNSLINGER) yielded just one rosette.  Well done Alonzo Quixote!  I can't remember that ever happening in the two years or so that I've been playing.  Is that a record for the lowest number of rosettes?

Words / Kidnaper?
« on: January 04, 2014, 10:12:00 AM »
Kidnaper (presumably a variant spelling of kidnapper) was listed as a common word in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  I'd question whether it's a common spelling.  I've certainly never seen it spelt like that before.

Word Games / Still counting rosettes
« on: January 02, 2014, 10:10:26 AM »
Happy new year, everyone!

Some of you may remember that some months ago, in a post bemoaning the lack of a rosette 'league table' in Chi, I revealed that I was keeping a tally of my rosettes for the year (much to the amusement of a couple of my fellow forumites!)  Well, I can now tell you that I managed 256 rosettes in 2013 (139 Standard, 68 Challenge, 49 10-letter).  That's nowhere near the top echelon of players, of course, but not bad for an honest toiler.  I didn't keep a tally of the times that I missed a rosette by one word - there were lots of those.  And if I could stop missing easy words I reckon I'd double my tally.

I still wish I could compare my tally with others.  Not necessarily in a competitive way, but just to see where I stand.  In the meantime, I'll be counting again in 2014.  So far I have 2!  :D

Words / Undead
« on: December 13, 2013, 11:02:30 PM »
Given the prevalence of zombies, vampires and the like in popular culture these days, I'd suggest that undead is now a common word.

In support of my claim, I point to the fact that 'paranormal romance' is now a special section in many mainstream bookshops (such as Dymock's here in Australia).  It seems that even the undead have active love lives!

Words / chatelaine
« on: November 06, 2013, 09:53:35 PM »
I was one of numerous players who didn't get chatelaine in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle (cost me a rosette too...grrrr!)  When I checked the solution, it rang only a very faint bell of recognition and I had to look up the meaning.  I don't know about others, but in my part of the world we don't have many mistresses of castles.  I'd question whether it's common.  I can honestly say the only time I've ever used the word was in this message!

Words / Midmost?
« on: October 26, 2013, 12:36:57 PM »
This was listed as a common word in yesterday's standard puzzle.  I must admit, I've never seen or heard it before (although obviously some people have because there were 19 rosettes in that game).  Is it really common?

Words / Word suggestion: entracte
« on: September 22, 2013, 09:57:49 AM »
I unsuccessfully tried entracte (the interval between the acts of a play or a piece of music) in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  Not a common word, but I'd suggest possibly worth including as a rare word.

Words / Modern materials
« on: August 24, 2013, 06:29:42 PM »
Mylar came up in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle as a rare word.  I'm surprised it's classified as rare.  I'd suggest it's well enough known these days to be common.

Similarly, lycra comes up from time to time, also as a rare word.  Another modern material that's pretty well known these days, and a candidate for upgrading in my view.

Words / amah
« on: July 25, 2013, 05:58:27 PM »
Amah was listed as common in yesterday's standard puzzle.  I'd never heard the word before and had to look it up.  I'd suggest it's a candidate for downgrading.  I wonder how many people got it.

Words / ibid
« on: July 05, 2013, 09:45:28 AM »
I see ibid has again made an appearance as a common word in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  I remember questioning its validity last time it came up on the grounds that it isn't really a word at all - it's a referencing notation which is an abbreviation of a latin term.  Alan, I don't see it on the list of words awaiting reconsideration.  Could you please add it?

Words / dogtrot?
« on: June 28, 2013, 06:30:25 PM »
This was one of the common words I missed in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  I've never heard it before.  What is it?  A kind of dance perhaps? (Like the foxtrot but with more slobbering)
