Words / Word suggestion: Nucleic
« on: February 03, 2015, 07:32:44 PM »
I was surprised that nucleic wasn't accepted in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  A common enough term, I would have thought, especially as it's the middle word in 'DNA'.  Worth adding to the list, I'd suggest.

Words / Word suggestions: Ummed/umming
« on: January 29, 2015, 11:25:38 AM »
I tried ummed (as in 'ummed and aahed') in yesterday's standard puzzle, but it wasn't accepted.  Given that aahed (and variant spellings) is accepted and the two usually go together I thought ummed was a pretty good bet.  I'd suggest that ummed and umming be added.

Words / Word suggestion: snagger
« on: January 13, 2015, 09:42:48 AM »
No doubt a few Australian players tried the word snagger in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  In Australian vernacular, a snagger (or snag) is a sausage.  Probably not commonly known outside Australia, but worth including as a rare word perhaps.

Word Games / 2014 Stats
« on: January 03, 2015, 11:20:11 AM »
Once again I've been obsessively recording my rosettes in 2014, and I'm happy to report that I managed a 44% improvement on last year.  In 2014 I got a total of 373 rosettes (204 standard, 119 Challenge and 50 10-letter).  Aiming for 400+ in 2015!

Alan, a suggestion for those of us interested in comparisons:  Would it be possible to publish lists of, say, the top 20 rosette-getters for the year for each puzzle and overall?

Words / Chaps and slacks
« on: December 19, 2014, 07:31:56 PM »
I tried chaps and slacks in a couple of recent puzzles.  Both were rejected.  I'd have thought that they fall into the same category as words like pants, shorts and tights, all of which are accepted as common words (i.e. they're all single items of clothing).  Logic would suggest to me that chaps and slacks should also be accepted.

Words / Seignior common?
« on: December 16, 2014, 09:44:30 PM »
This was a new one on me in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  Had to look it up.  I can't say I've ever heard it said or seen it written.  A candidate for downgrading perhaps?

Words / Word suggestion: Tinnies
« on: November 12, 2014, 06:37:26 PM »
I tried tinnies in a puzzle a few days ago (I forget which one now) and, while I wasn't entirely surprised it wasn't accepted, I think it should be, as a rare word.  In the  Australian vernacular, a tinny can be two things:  a) a can of beer, and b) a small aluminium dinghy.  I'd say most Aussies would be familiar with both meanings.

Word Games / Player stats
« on: October 15, 2014, 06:56:34 PM »
How often are the player stats updated?  The current ones haven't been updated since the end of July.  Not complaining, just curious.  I still keep my own rosette tally, but it's also nice to know how you're faring in relation to the other interesting stats that Alan has included.

Word Games / Scoreboard anomaly
« on: September 10, 2014, 07:15:35 PM »
In the 10 letter puzzle that's just finished (the ELASTICITY game), I got three words seconds before the game ended (2 common, 1 rare).  While those words are showing on my word list, they haven't registered on the scoreboard.  Not sure why.  I still finished one word short of a rosette, so it hasn't really cost me anything, but still, I'd like my player stats to accurately reflect the number of words I got.

Words / Word suggestion: Ruckman
« on: September 03, 2014, 06:24:58 PM »
Followers of Australian Rules football will be familiar with the term ruckman, which I tried unsuccessfully in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  I suggest it's worth adding as a rare word, along with ruckmen.

Word Games / A dearth of rosettes
« on: August 27, 2014, 06:37:45 PM »
I finished two words short of a rosette on yesterday's 10 letter puzzle (the PLANTATION game).  Given that only two people got a rosette, I expected at least one of those missed words to be something unusual, so I was surprised to find that the two words I missed were both indisputably common (attain and titan).  There weren't any really strange common words in that puzzle.

I wonder why so few got them all.  ???

Words / Word suggestion: dropline
« on: August 16, 2014, 08:50:46 AM »
I unsuccessfully tried dropline (a term used in journalism/newspaper layout) in yesterday's Challenge puzzle.  I suggest it's worth adding as rare word.

Words / Word suggestion: bestie
« on: July 19, 2014, 09:37:50 PM »
I unsuccessfully tried bestie (short for 'best friend') in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  It's a fairly common term these days, especially among younger people, and worth including in my view.

Words / Man/woman endings
« on: July 09, 2014, 06:27:16 PM »
Yesterday's 10 letter puzzle included the words airmen and airwomen, as well as chairmen and chairwomen.  It also included iceman, and I was somewhat surprised that icewoman didn't count.  Logic suggests (to me at least) that any word that can end in -man or -men, should also be able to end in -woman or -women.  I'd concede that icewoman probably wouldn't be common, but the language surely allows for its existence.

Words / Biol
« on: May 02, 2014, 06:32:02 PM »
A little while back, the word econ (a contraction of economics) was added to the list of acceptable words after a suggestion from (I think) Tom44.  In the same vein, I tried biol in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle, but it was rejected.  I'd suggest that biol is as widely known as econ and should also be added.
