Words / Re: Milliard and laminar - common?
« on: March 26, 2024, 08:03:51 AM »
Although I grew up with a billion being a million million, I had never heard the term milliard being used for what I just thought of then as being the peculiar 'American billion'. In my later technical life I transitioned permanently and somewhat reluctantly to the now universal billion. In that same technical life the word laminar was so common to me that I never thought of it as being particularly technical. I almost always see it in the word list. But I can see from the comments here how odd that is.

I suspect that it is not classed as common because it isn't used outside the US. Certainly, the rule "it's not common everywhere"...
My understanding of 'common' in Chi is not so much where it is used, but how widely it is known. As an Australian there are many words that are exclusive to the UK or US but which I know very well from reading or movies. Sophomore being one of them.
I am also familiar with the term sophomoric humour, which I don't regard as being exclusively US.

Does anyone else have difficulty accepting mesomorph as common. Particularly in a game where it was the seed word, while sophomore was available but uncommon. My view is that the status of the two should be reversed.

What could be scurfier than a seed word that is not part of one's vocabulary?
I absolutely agree. I eventually got it out of sheer persistence trying out all possible variations of word endings. Absolutely amazed when it not only accepted it as word, but as a common word.,

I was the other way round: install my (Australian) spelling, and instal someone else's. But I've always entered both spellings to be on the safe side.

Ta, Alan. Happy with both decisions. Thank you.

Jacki, it will be the adjectival form. In looking it up I came across it used in the phrase "The twilit streets... " and I guess that while I perfectly understand what that means, I don't think of it as a common form of the word. And we have plenty of examples where different forms of a common root word have different common/uncommon classifications. But having just seen TRex's post as I wrote this I might have to back off my opposition to its common classification.?

Yes, I can see a case for spotlit remaining common, but outside of Chihuahua I've never seen twilit written or spoken. Maybe it was in the sentence originally preceding: it was a dark and gloomy night.... Mind you it doesn't help that I'm from a part of the world that doesn't have a twilight more than 5 minutes long, so maybe my ignorance is geographic.

I got twilit in yesterday's 7byMany, but only because it had cropped up a week or so ago. I wonder whether this form of the word should remain common. Although I am happy with sunlit and moonlit remaining common, I suspect spotlit could also be questioned.

Well I'm suffering a bout of illness. No, make that two illnesses.

While I was ticked off that icecap eluded me, I'm glad I didn't persevere trying to find that last big word. I think I have never heard slipcase before, but at least now I know what to call those boxes that expensive books come in!

I tried to circle the oriole but it flew away. Then the circle left as well, leaving me quite lost for words.

I suppose not being particularly pious didn't help me this time.

Dickens' A Tale of Two Cities was a standard text dissected at length in English during my High School years. Tumbrels figure prominently.

On this occasion my sentience didn't help me.
