Whatever / Re: Help!
« on: April 14, 2015, 04:22:30 AM »
For a while I was puzzled by your experiences, cb, because when I use ctrl + and - in Firefox, the letters on the cross get bigger and smaller just like the rest of the page. But then I discovered that Firefox has an option to control what happens when you use ctrl + and -. The way my Firefox was set up, the screen simply zooms in and out, so everything grows and shrinks to the same extent, whether text or image or whatever. Presumably you have things set up to "Zoom text only". In this mode, the letters on the cross do indeed go weird and unreadable. Sorry!

I think I was trying to change things so that the letters on the cross would change size in line with the text on the page (which can be adjusted in various ways in various browsers). But I obviously never got it working. I think I may have given up the idea as too complicated, given all the things that have to change if the letters change in size. But it seems I forgot to remove the partial changes I had made. I'll fix this up soon.

As for the other problems people have mentioned, I don't know what's causing these things, but I'll keep investigating.

Cor - you're right but I had no idea - don't actually remember setting that option.
Many thanks, as always, for your instant diagnostics, not to mention the fabulous game.

My problem is that I can no longer increase the text size when playing.  I tend to increase it (in Firefox, using CTRL+ to increase size and CTRL- to decrease) - the letters on the cross (which appear to be graphics images rather than items of text) go weird and unreadable.  If I reset the font size to default (CTRL 0) then all is oK - but I struggle to read anything on the screen except the main parts of the game.

Not disputing Alan's definition, or decision to change tween to rare, but just thought I would add that the word immediately makes me think of computer animation, and the automatic generation of "in-between" images to create a smoother animation.   Perhaps I've just been teaching Adobe Flash Animation to too many teenagers!

I'm 22 and I'm a stay at home mum and I feel inferior reading everyone's comments.
Look at you all, achieving things with your lives.

You are doing one of the most important and significant jobs on the planet.  And one I did too, when my two were small.  Then I went back to work (and indeed, started a whole new career) once they were at school.  You have many many years ahead of you to do many more things - but don't downplay what you are doing now - value it, and enjoy it.  They are never small again (mum of a 17yo and 20yo).

Are you a Monty Python fan, Morbius? Any others out there besides mkenuk (forgive the assumption, but based on your thread title) and me?

Another Python fan here, too.  Any of any of you who have seen MP & the Holy Grail: the white rabbit was the pet of one of my school friends.  They were filming at Doune Castle (the bit with the French knights taunting from the castle walls) and put up posters asking if anyone had a white rabbit they could use in filming.  He came back pink from all the fake blood!

No, these are criminals, engaged in attempting to defraud people out of thousands of pounds, by lying to them that their computer is producing "errors", and then persuading them to download and install a "fix" which is actually a program giving the criminals access to the computer which then results in any of a combination of stealing money from their banks, stealing passwords to accounts and/or locking the computer and holding it to ransom, demanding vast sums of money to unlock it again.

That's a different species of kettle of fish altogether.  I was referring to the original post of nuisance phone calls --- salesmen and the like.  Scam artists and fraudsters should be, of course, reported to the police.  Sorry, but salesmen and con artists are not the same thing.

Sorry, Enisform, but Pat's original post WAS specifically about Asian callers claiming to be following up on errors from her computer - she didn't mention the fraud specifically, but those calls very definitely are from criminal gangs.  And my post about stringing them along was about that too.  Which is why I took exception to your defence of them.

These are people like you and I, who hold jobs they do not necessarily believe in, but which they have taken to put food on the table for their family.  Playing pranks on them or stringing them along is cruel as well as petty.  Why not be a mature adult, say "No thank you, good luck elsewhere," and hang up?

I cannot understand people's enthusiasm for being rude and nasty to people who are trying to make a living.  You're free to say no and hang up.

A friend of mine, her 12 year old son answered the phone, believed the story, downloaded and installed the program, and when he told his mum that evening there was £3000 taken from their bank account and the computer had to be completely reformatted, losing all their data, photos etc to get it working again.  (Yes, I know they should have had a backup, but they wouldn't have needed it in this instance were it not for the criminals.)

So, no, I shan't be wishing them "good luck elsewhere".  They are safe from being caught and stopped because they operate at such vast distances from their victims, in different legal jurisdictions, but I, for one, will certainly continue to do all I can to inhibit their activities.

Valerie and mkenuk, you are not alone!  And I LOVE the suggestion of Chi sarkily pointing out "Sorry, X still not known" - perhaps there should be a version (specially for me!?) that says "That's the 5th time you've tried it this game, and X still not known..."

I have an unlisted number and have been on the UK's do-not-call register (Telephone Preference Service) but still get dozens of these calls - despite hardly ever giving out my phone number.
My dad, being retired, likes to have fun with them - especially the Asian "we have detected your computer producing error messages" type calls.  He strings the call out as long as possible, e.g. if they ask him "is your computer on" he says "oh no" so they say "could you turn it on please" so he says "alright", but you'll have to wait whilst I climb up stairs - then keeps them hanging on for five minutes making grunting-climbing-up-stairs noises...   he lives in a bungalow!  The longest he's managed so far is over 45 minutes.
One time when he answered, the caller said "Oh no, it's you" and hung up on him.

I've a notion there are a fair few teachers (current and retired) and a fair few computer bods - engineers and programers, hereabouts.

I combine the two - I'm a high school Computing teacher in Edinburgh.
