For a while I was puzzled by your experiences, cb, because when I use ctrl + and - in Firefox, the letters on the cross get bigger and smaller just like the rest of the page. But then I discovered that Firefox has an option to control what happens when you use ctrl + and -. The way my Firefox was set up, the screen simply zooms in and out, so everything grows and shrinks to the same extent, whether text or image or whatever. Presumably you have things set up to "Zoom text only". In this mode, the letters on the cross do indeed go weird and unreadable. Sorry!

I think I was trying to change things so that the letters on the cross would change size in line with the text on the page (which can be adjusted in various ways in various browsers). But I obviously never got it working. I think I may have given up the idea as too complicated, given all the things that have to change if the letters change in size. But it seems I forgot to remove the partial changes I had made. I'll fix this up soon.

As for the other problems people have mentioned, I don't know what's causing these things, but I'll keep investigating.

Cor - you're right but I had no idea - don't actually remember setting that option.

Not disputing Alan's definition, or decision to change tween to rare, but just thought I would add that the word immediately makes me think of computer animation, and the automatic generation of "in-between" images to create a smoother animation.   Perhaps I've just been teaching Adobe Flash Animation to too many teenagers!

You are doing one of the most important and significant jobs on the planet.  And one I did too, when my two were small.  Then I went back to work (and indeed, started a whole new career) once they were at school.  You have many many years ahead of you to do many more things - but don't downplay what you are doing now - value it, and enjoy it.  They are never small again (mum of a 17yo and 20yo).

These are people like you and I, who hold jobs they do not necessarily believe in, but which they have taken to put food on the table for their family.  Playing pranks on them or stringing them along is cruel as well as petty.  Why not be a mature adult, say "No thank you, good luck elsewhere," and hang up?

I cannot understand people's enthusiasm for being rude and nasty to people who are trying to make a living.  You're free to say no and hang up.

No, these are criminals, engaged in attempting to defraud people out of thousands of pounds, by lying to them that their computer is producing "errors", and then persuading them to download and install a "fix" which is actually a program giving the criminals access to the computer which then results in any of a combination of stealing money from their banks, stealing passwords to accounts and/or locking the computer and holding it to ransom, demanding vast sums of money to unlock it again.

A friend of mine, her 12 year old son answered the phone, believed the story, downloaded and installed the program, and when he told his mum that evening there was £3000 taken from their bank account and the computer had to be completely reformatted, losing all their data, photos etc to get it working again.  (Yes, I know they should have had a backup, but they wouldn't have needed it in this instance were it not for the criminals.)

So, no, I shan't be wishing them "good luck elsewhere".  They are safe from being caught and stopped because they operate at such vast distances from their victims, in different legal jurisdictions, but I, for one, will certainly continue to do all I can to inhibit their activities.

Valerie and mkenuk, you are not alone!  And I LOVE the suggestion of Chi sarkily pointing out "Sorry, X still not known" - perhaps there should be a version (specially for me!?) that says "That's the 5th time you've tried it this game, and X still not known..."

I've a notion there are a fair few teachers (current and retired) and a fair few computer bods - engineers and programers, hereabouts.
