Words / Word(s) suggestion
« on: November 07, 2019, 11:07:34 AM »
In the recent 7x7 "Unwritten" game, unwrit was not accepted.  Granted, probably only a poet would use it, but it is a word.

Words / pressie common? Impressed game
« on: September 15, 2019, 01:59:33 PM »
Not on this side of the pond.  Thanks to my omnivorous trash romance reading, I do know the word, but I doubt it's common.  At least I've never heard anyone use it here.

Words / word suggestion: rehid
« on: September 13, 2019, 10:07:05 AM »
Past tense of rehide, and if you have a memory like mine, there are a lot of things I rehid that may remain rehidden forever.

Sorry this is late, Alan, but I was out of town yesterday with no access to a computer.  I hope you had a great day and spent it just the way you most wanted to.

Whatever / "My memory fails me..."
« on: March 09, 2017, 05:34:55 PM »
Which seems to happen more often than I like, especially when I'm looking for those last few common words.  But I digress.

Can't remember which thread it was in but recently there was some reminiscing about the hags, and someone was wondering about that timeless novel we were writing.  My memory may fail me, but not the research skills:  It was started by Technomc, and was called "The Titleless Story" and that was back in 2007.

For those who don't want to pour through the entire oeuvre, you can find the gist by searching "titleless story synopsis."

This Forum / Where are you?
« on: March 20, 2016, 02:03:54 PM »
Ages ago I suggested it would be nice to know where forumites live/are from, partly because it's just interesting to see how widespread our group is, and partly because that might show where particular words are considered common or rare.  For those concerned about privacy, it could be just the name of a town/city, or as general as "outside but near Paris."

Quite a few forumites did add their locations, but we have many new people who may not have done so but might like to.

I figured I'd post in this thread in hopes that some of our new forum mates will see it and add their locations under their photos.  CB gave some good instructions on how to do it in an earlier post.

To move your location: Click on Profile (dark blue bar above the messages, 4th item in from the left).  On the new window, at the left hand side, find Modify Profile.  Click on the 2nd entry Forum Profile Information.

To upload a pic:  Choose "I will upload my own picture" then use the browse... button to find that picture on your computer.  Alternatively, if you want to use one you already have on the web somewhere, use "I have my own pic" and type in the website address of the pic.

Then in Personal Text type in your location information - this will then show under your picture.

Now click Change Profile at the very bottom of the screen so save the changes you have made.

Whatever / Happy Birthday, a non-Amos

I hope it's everything you want it to be.  Somehow, I know the food will be good.  ;)

standard puzzle for 2/19/201

Very common tropical disease.  I was surprised that it was refused.

Say Hello / Happy Birthday, Alan!

Let me be the first to wish you a happy birthday, Alan, even though it hasn't happened here yet!  I hope it's everything you want it to be!

The Daily Quest / I must brag
« on: March 05, 2014, 05:05:46 AM »
This may sound quite pitiful to those of you who regularly reach these exalted heights, but I am rejoicing in only my second rosette, and I finally got to maven status, which is probably almost as rare or maybe even rarer.

I have a pretty good vocabulary, latent though it may be, but my anagramatic skills are downright crummy.  And don't bother looking up that word, because I just made it up, although having checked Wordnik, I see that I'm not the first to do so.

Whatever / map of regional American dialects
« on: May 13, 2013, 11:43:16 AM »
Once I looked at this map, I became even more relieved that Chi only deals with spelling, not pronunciation. Regional words and spellings are bad enough!

This is a labor of love by a man who does this for a hobby.

Words / Dictionaries
« on: March 14, 2013, 02:01:27 AM »
I got this interesting article from the Chronicle of Higher Education on my daily Library Link: about dictionaries in this digital world.  So few of my friends really care about such subjects that I had to share it with some who would!

Words / obscure and obsolete words
« on: April 23, 2012, 01:26:13 AM »
An interesting word-a-day site with very obscure words.  I knew a few of them in the archive list, and could figure out a few more, but had never heard of most of them.

How about everyone else?

Say Hello / Happy Birthday, Linda!
« on: April 15, 2012, 02:26:59 PM »
Though I think it's slipped past even on this side of the pond.  But not in Hawaii!  So I shall be imagining you sitting under a palm tree, enjoying a lovely drink adorned with a little umbrella, while all the beach boys gather around to sing Happy Birthday to you.
