This Forum / Disparity in times shown for Forum messages
« on: April 16, 2017, 10:27:49 PM »
There appears to be a fourteen hour disparity in the time listed for a forum message as compared to when it was actually posted.

This example describes a message currently appearing at the top of the Forum.

For example, a message is listed as posted today (referring to the message itself) as 03:56:42AM.

However, the message is shown on the Forum as today 05:56:42PM.

Where I am in the United States it is still morning.  That is, the time shown in the Forum has not yet occurred.

I have checked my profile and it shows my "Chihuahua time" is correctly synchronized with my current local time.

Have I got something incorrectly set?

The Daily Quest / Sluggishness
« on: May 21, 2015, 09:38:08 PM »
Has anyone experienced an extremely sluggish response while entering words the past couple of days?

I have been noticing that words seem to take much longer to be entered.

I have also noticed that the "diamond" symbols appearing next to each active player seem to have suffered an extreme loss of "energy"; they do not "oscillate" as normal, and disappear completely, while maintaining the space reserved where they would ordinarily appear.

I have rebooted and refreshed my browser, Firefox, a couple of times, with little change in response time.

Words / glycemia
« on: May 13, 2015, 06:45:00 PM »
Suggestion for new word inclusion—

glycemia

Glycemia is the presence of glucose in the blood.

Perhaps this might be considered a "technical" term.

Some may know this as a root of the following—

hyperglycemia (the presence of too much sugar in the blood); this may commonly be associated with diabetes

hypoglycemia (the presence of too little sugar in the blood); this may result from too much insulin or a poor diet

Words / June 28th -- possible spoiler
« on: June 28, 2014, 07:11:51 PM »
ringtone

This was suggested previously in 2012 but I am not aware of what may have happened to this suggestion...

I suggest this as the number of cell phones (cellular phones, mobile phones) has proliferated to an almost unbelievable extent...certainly in the United States and I'm sure elsewhere as well.

definition:

the sound a cell phone makes when receiving a call or text message

It is amazing to hear some of the choices one may choose for a ringtone.
I've actually heard a cellphone with a ringtone that sounds exactly like the sound of a landline telephone ringing!!!  What a shock!!!

This Forum / A slight change in the Forum?
« on: September 05, 2012, 09:33:03 PM »
For some reason, the "New" tag which identifies new posts in the Forum, is no longer appearing.

This has been a useful feature.

Has this been disabled?

Or is there a setting in my profile which may somehow have been reset so that "New" no longer appears?

A follow up observation to my question:  Now that I have just posted my query here, the "New" tag has reappeared!!!!  Go figure...

Word Games / Scoreboard strangeness
« on: July 25, 2012, 10:29:46 PM »
The scoreboard exhibited the following strangeness for the Standard puzzle, Wednesday July 25th—

Upon attempting to enter the puzzle, puzzle (which had just opened) was declared "The puzzle is now closed."

Despite this, it was possible to enter words into the puzzle.  For a long time, the scoreboard was "frozen" and entering new words had no effect on the scores shown.  Finally this "frozen" condition was overcome, and appropriate scores were shown.

The oddest thing is that the scoreboard shows—

"Puzzle closes 15,545 days ago..."  [= 42.6 years ago, which would be in the early 1970's!!!!]

Obviously a software glitch of some kind.

The same strangeness observed for the Wednesday, July 25th Standard puzzle has reoccurred for the Thursday, July 26th Challenge puzzle.

This unusual condition did not occur in the Chinchilla puzzle for Wednesday, July 25th.

Words / briss
« on: December 01, 2011, 05:25:18 AM »
briss  is another spelling for—

bris
brith

all of which have the same meaning—

briss

noun
the Jewish rite of circumcision performed on a male child on the eighth day of his life [syn: Berith]

WordNet® 3.0, © 2006 by Princeton University

See Tuesday, November 29th Chinchilla puzzle.

Since bris and brith are already acceptable, should briss also be accepted?

Words / inasmuch
« on: November 17, 2011, 03:39:55 AM »
I'm wondering if  inasmuch  might qualify for addtion.

Most of the definitions appear to be from quite a long time ago.

Free Dictionary cites  The Collaborative International Dictionary of English v.0.48:

Inasmuch \In`as*much"\, adv. [In + as + much.]
In like degree; in like manner; seeing that; considering
that; since; -- followed by as.  See In as much as, under
   In, prep.

This Forum / Strange times appearing on forum
« on: June 29, 2011, 11:57:59 PM »
This is something that I just noticed and I'm not sure what may have caused it.  Perhaps one of the cyber glitches that happen from time to time.

I was looking at the times indicated for the latest forum messages and they made no sense to me.

I checked my profile to see if I have the correct offset factor for my time zone (USA, Eastern Daylight Time).  I do have the right factor.

After doing this, I went back to the forum and the odd-appearing times seemed now to be correct.

This is not a major problem, just a funny anomaly that has been corrected.

Also, before the correction the  (NEW)  message indicator did not appear as it usually has.

Hopefully the  (NEW)  message indicator will be restored.

Just posted the message and the  (NEW)  indicator appeared for a message NOT new and did NOT appear for my posting.  Strange.  Also, as I am key-entering this modification, the characters are jumping all over in a bizarre way.  More cyber glitches???

Words / unitiser
« on: April 22, 2011, 07:42:40 PM »
This refers to Chinchilla puzzle of April 21st.

unitiser  was not accepted.

But  unitiseunitize,  and  unitizer  were accepted.

This seems inconsistent to me.

Words / salinate /salinated
« on: April 19, 2011, 10:11:28 PM »
Suggested new words for consideration—

(based on Chinchilla puzzle for Monday, April 18th)

salinate

verb
add salt to; "salinated solution" [ant: desalinate]

Reference #1:
WordNet® 3.0, © 2006 by Princeton University.

Verb 1. salinate - add salt to; "salinated solution"

change - undergo a change; become different in essence; losing one's or its original nature; "She changed completely as she grew older"; "The weather changed last night"
desalinate, desalinise, desalinize, desalt - remove salt from; "desalinate water"

Reference #2:
Based on WordNet 3.0, Farlex clipart collection. © 2003-2008 Princeton University, Farlex Inc.

This is the complete reference found.  I am puzzled by the inclusion of the two lines of text which begin:  "change - undergo a change;..."
These two lines do not make sense in this definition.

Words / aeroport / eoraptor
« on: February 05, 2011, 02:42:53 PM »
These two words are suggested based on the Challenge puzzle of Friday, February 4th.

aeroport  is a rare and dated reference to an airport.

eoraptor  is a theropod dinosaur of the genus Eoraptor.  Eoraptor is the most primitive dinosaur known — 228 million years old.

Words / Odd Happening—Challenge puzzle for Mon. January 31st
« on: January 31, 2011, 12:53:43 PM »
I don't think I have ever seen this happen before.

There are two nine-letter words found in this puzzle and both of them appear to be  rare

There is one word that I believe would most probably be common.

Words / demos
« on: July 27, 2010, 03:02:55 PM »
I would like to suggest that  demos  be considered for inclusion.

It is the plural of  demo  and would be disqualified on that basis.

But it has another meaning—

demos
–noun
1. the common people of an ancient Greek state.
2. the common people; populace.
3. Sociology . a people viewed as a political unit.
