Common to me, but often have to explain it to others.  What do you call a "&" if you don't use the word ampersand?
"The symbol for and" seems a bit unwieidy when it does have a name.

Words / Twee not common?
« on: June 05, 2020, 01:11:24 PM »
Looking at the solution to yesterday's "weathered" game, I was surprised not to see twee amongst the common words.
Although it's not something I often say out loud because so few people seem to know what I mean and to avoid hurting feelings,  I expected it to be commonly known among Chi participants. It's a word I often use in my own head and said out loud only two days ago.
Curious to know whether others consider it rare or common these days.

I wouldn't have tried redye, but rostered seems pretty common here in Tasmania.  People are frequently 'rostered on'  at work.

Well I got fistula but not fistulae.  But then I also didn't get faculties  :-R
I don't have any medical training but I've heard of fistula in relation to childbirth, and perineum in that context.  I do know where  mine is

I also played beck and I missed aback.
Surely one is only 'taken aback', I can't think of any other use for it.
Which would place it in the same category as 'beck & call'?

But isn't inamorata Italian?  Is it that common in English?

I've never tried cooking scrambled eggs in the microwave Linda!  I always use a small saucepan & then moan like hell because it's a nightmare to wash it up

Small non-stick frypan is I use.  So quick to cook & quick to clean up.

Whatever / Re: Gorgeously game

It got me thinking though;  I know there are a few regular players who in playing a game attempt to enter only common words.
How would they deal with such a situation?
One common word short of a rosette, they can see both serology and urology and know that one of them is probably the word they are looking for. Which one to choose?

They log out, try the word then log back in to finish the game   >:D

Whatever / Re: Greetings from AQ

Thanks for passing on news of AQ.  I've been keeping an eye out on the scoreboard, awaiting their return.

We don't have Thanksgiving here in Australia - yet. However, our retailers have embraced Black Friday sales wholeheartedly.

Yeah, I find that rather weird.  First Halloween, then Black Friday sales.  Thanksgiving can't be far away. :)  Wonder what other holidays we can appropriate from other cultures.

Gosh I would have expected it to be common.

I wouldn't have thought of either hotcake or trackshoe.  I did see horsetack but again wouldn't have tried it 'cos I think it would be two words.

Words / Re: pressie common? Impressed game
« on: September 17, 2019, 02:09:12 PM »
That's where I learn a lot of British/Australian slang and for that matter, other non-American words.

Here I was wondering whether there was some use for the word that I might not know.  I worry in case I use a word thinking it has an innocuous meaning and in fact it means something rather more ... sexual?

I mentioned it because I like to let people know that opportunities to increase their vocabulary are everywhere!  Or as one of our library's kids' reading incentives says, "Reading Is Fundamental."  :)

So very true.

Thanks to my omnivorous trash romance reading...

Not sure what the trash romance has to with 'pressie'.   Fairly common alternative to present on my side of the pond.
