i tried maoist and it was rejected - i know that it originally came from someone who followed the teachings of Chairman Mao, but surely nowadays it just means someone who adheres to a particular political view point - i think maoist should be allowed!

Words / no Umpy?
« on: August 16, 2007, 10:25:02 PM »
Dear Al,
i just tried Umpy in a random puzzle and had it rejected? - I can understand that it would not be a common word, but it is very common in Oz- particularly in Vic, where the umpires at footy games are always called the umpy -(Also known sometimes as white maggots, but that's a bit rude) Anyway,  just listen to the Coodabeens any Saturday morning on the ABC and you will hear numerous references to the umpy - i guess the plural would be umpies - i call on the other Victorians who follow the AFL to back me up on this. Carn the Saints (she says without much conviction at this stage of the season)

Hi vvv- it's a very long time since i heard sprog - in particular sprog as in semen was very common (as in not unusual) when i was a gel - but seems to have gone completely out of fashion now - replaced by cum i think. and sometimes spunk also was used to mean semen, whereas now of course it means attractive (or brave?)

and one hardly ever hears about cars having prangs nowadays - they have smashes - much less attractive

Well, i suppose "whinging pom"  is a bit of a australian cliche - but still - it's a damn fine word i think!

i dont mind about any of them except whinge (and whinger/ whinging) i never in my wildest dreams thought it was UK - certainly very common in Oz - what on earth do Americans do if they dont whinge - in fact i have heard them whinge frequently - particularly when travelling in Europe - they whinge about everything - the prices, the food, the fact that the locals insist on speaking their own language etc - and i am very partial to a good whinge -  it's just about my favourite pastime - so please don't demote it.
Anyway, some book i read recently said that Poms "moan" - which i understood to be the same as whinge, - not sure what that proves except that it's not just "English" English.

Whatever / Re: Calling Melborne residents!!!

it is strange that so many americans seem to like Starbucks coffee (actually can hardly cal it coffee - i agree Bobbi - too weak and nasty tasting) and i dont think it's different in the US - although I've never been to Seattle so cant comment - but in other places fairly disgusting - we are quite lucky in Melbourne due to the large Italian post ww2 migration. but you would think that Vietnam with it's big french influence could lift their coffee game - their baguettes are quite nice.

hi dave - like the poem - i like the last two lines - it's the widening gloom which strikes a discordant note with me. and i'm sure you have a good reason, but in the 3rd line i read "they" as "that" (without the semi colon of course) and then i kind of liked the "that ", although it does change the meaning slightly. loved the morning coming at glacial speed   yay you!

The Daily Quest / Re: The subject of CHEATING...again....
« on: July 22, 2007, 09:03:49 PM »
yes T - a thoughtful response - but  (this is to L and 3B) i found the series of posts immediately  below T's mildly offensive.  The question of who posts/ who doesn't has (as T says) been discussed at length, and it odd to see comments like "over thinking" or "dog with a bone", in reference, i am assuming, to one of my initial comments on this question.

perhaps i should add that my question / query was not intended to arrive at a a definitive answer, but to pose a possible hypothesis as to why people post and the relationship (if any) between scores and posts. I wonder Al if you could cast some light on this - is there a correlation between high scores/ trophies/ rosettes and posts?
