Words / SPOILER: Word suggestion for Sunday’s puzzle
« on: August 16, 2020, 04:59:45 PM »
Hi there!
I tried the word tsampa, which was not recognised.

It’s the staple diet of  Tibetans.
Roasted barley flour.
I read about this as a child (many  years ago) in a series of books by Lobsang Rampa, somehow the word  has stayed in my brain.
A google search certainly mentions it too.
What do you think?

I'm definitely not into sewing — soon after I met my wife, she saw my solution to a hole in a trousers' pocket: alternating layers of staples and masking tape. (She wasn't impressed even though it had lasted through several dozen washes and dryer cycles!)

Ingenuity! I love sewing but give me duct tape and a hammer and I'm still happy.

If you're into sewing patterns and national costumes ...yes!

Words / Word suggestion for today
« on: January 28, 2013, 09:20:05 PM »
Whilst doing today's game, I tried the word "dugite" which was rejected.
This is a very common word in Western Australia, being one of our local snakes, and having had a dry bite from one, they are very real!
Not common, but it is out there!

Words / Re: Opthalmic not a standard word!
« on: October 04, 2011, 06:46:10 PM »
I think it's important to note that many people mispronounce the word ophthalmic ..also  diphtheria.

They have a definite "F'  sound in there.

"Off-thalmic" (correct)  as opposed to op-thalmic (incorrect)

Same with diphtheria ( diff- theria).  Many people incorrectly say dip- theria.

.. Didge didn't even register as an uncommon word... but it's always been a short version of didgeridoo, esp. here in WA

In Australia, a  term of endearment for our brothers and sisters in the UK...I am one myself originally.. .but I believe people in the UK think  our use of the word  "pommies" as being a  derogatory thing.

Whatever / different languages
« on: July 22, 2008, 11:22:48 PM »
But I'm very excited because I had my first French language lesson tonight..I havent' spoken French since school days which was a lifetime ago. I'm surprised how it's all coming back to me.. but perhaps I should be posting this in a different thread.

I used to speak  quite a bit of Spanish many many years ago... and German is a language from my childhood.. but I can't speak anything except English now.. and even that is a chore sometimes!
How many different languages do you all have out there in the wide world..??

Not only did I get that wrong, I can't even get near to close to a solution tonight.

Do you have days when you just can't get your mind around the word.. ?

Words / Dias
« on: July 22, 2008, 10:40:08 PM »
Just looking at today's challenge game.. and have put in the word dias...and  it was rejected!

This is what people stand on when they make a speech....and we certainly had school assemblies with teachers and headmasters spouting forth wisdom from the dias.
If you google "stood on the dias".. there are many examples to be seen..and yet it does not qualify even as a rare word... but it certainly was used very frequently in Australia when I was growing up.
