Words / Meerkat
« on: March 05, 2021, 07:26:58 PM »
I played meerkat in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle and was surprised that it came up as rare.  I was also surprised to find that only about 15% of players found it.  Obviously it's a hard word to spot.  Nonetheless, I reckon pretty much everyone knows what a meerkat is, so I'd argue that it should be a common word.

Ballboys and ballgirls tend to be referred to as ballkids these days.  So, all three should be added to the Chi lexicon (assuming Alan determines that they are acceptable as single words).

Yes, I thought of it too, but dictionaries list it either as two words or hyphenated.

wordsinasentence.com gives the following examples:

My daughter hopes her makeover will enamor feelings from her secret crush.

When Amber lost her temper, she did not enamor herself to the police officer.

The dancer will use her skillful moves to try and enamor the judging panel.

Because the pageant contestant did not enamor the judges with her performance, she knows she will not win the crown.

My sisterís delicious cooking never fails to enamor her loving husband.

Given that covid (without capitals) is only 'occasionally seen', I think it should be classified as rare.

From the recent MUSHROOMED game - shroom is a term for those so-called 'magic mushrooms' (the hallucinogenic kind).  It's in several dictionaries.  Worth adding as a rare word in my view.

I think nano is allowed.  If so, pico should also be allowed.

Words / Racoon/raccoon
« on: December 01, 2020, 09:33:44 PM »
Racoon appeared as a common word in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle.  I got it this time after missing it in an earlier puzzle.  Dictionaries list it as a variant spelling of raccoon (which I presume is also common in Chi).  It seems odd to me that a variant spelling would be classified as common.  I've only ever seen it written as raccoon.  As a general principle, I think most variant spellings should be classified as rare.  Of course, there are no raccoons in my part of the world, so maybe racoon is a common variant elsewhere.

Words / Re: plurals question
« on: November 21, 2020, 10:42:03 AM »
I think it depends on whether it's a common word.  In the example you give, Tom, live (the verb) is a common word, so lives isn't allowed even though it's also an irregular plural of life.  If live were a rare word, lives would be allowed.

Yes that's true, but it shouldn't alter the plurals rule.

One of the words I missed in yesterday's 10 letter puzzle was baldies.  I didn't play it because I'd already played baldie which was accepted.  Surely if baldie is accepted, baldies cannot be accepted because of the plurals rule.  It didn't cost me a rosette, but it's still rather annoying.

I agree that compound words are hard to find.  However, I wouldn't agree that palmtop and taproom are common words.  They're not common to me, at least.  I did get palmtop, but not taproom.  I've actually never heard the word before.

Words / Rehire/rehired

From the recent HEREDITARY game: Rehire (common), rehired (rare).  I can't see why they should be classified differently.  Both common, I'd suggest.
