Title: Vise
Post by: PJune on January 27, 2023, 04:37:38 AM
What does everyone else call a common workshop tool with two jaws that are operated by a screw?  Every time I play the word "Vise" it comes back as rare.  Unless there's another word for the tool, I think it could be considered for an upgrade to common.

Any comments?

Over here (UK) it's spelt vice. Vise is probably not common because it's not a universally standard spelling, whereas vice is common due to it having another meaning.

Do a search on the forum. It has been discussed in the past — quite a bit, IIRC.

Unfortunately, AFAIK, a search cannot be done on just the word, it is always done on the combination of letters in order so the search results require examination of each hit. :-(

I did a forum search and the 2010 discussion was before my time on Chi; I've never had occasion to do a search before, so it didn't occur to me to try it.
