Title: Wordle
Post by: pat on January 11, 2022, 08:35:29 PM
I've just found a new word game that might be of interest to Chi players. Starting from scratch you have 6 goes to get the word, a sort of word hangman. There's only one game a day so you won't spend hours on it.

I've been playing for a few days now....since RTT posted the link on the More or Les page on January 6th !

I didn't see that, auntiemo. I don't read the More or Les thread. What do you reckon to the game?

I like it....6 from 6 so far....and I'm spreading the word. Always good to have another means of wasting time  :)

Hi Moyra,

I have now completed 20.  I have put a summary of my efforts in the More or Les thread with a challenge to show better results.

Pat, could you visit us just this once?

I've had  look. Well done, Jack. Being newer to the game than you I'm only on six out of six.

I (now) know you'd already mentioned Wordle in the More or Les thread before I started this thread, but as this is a dedicated thread why not show your results here?

Hi Pat,

We have ongoing challenges (rebuses) and a regular following in the More or Les thread and so it seemed natural to drop another challenge in there.  However, if this thread is to become ongoing with regular updates on performances, then I am quite happy to contribute now and again.

If it is not to fizzle it needs a volunteer (you?) to be a ringmaster to gee up the troops now and again and to provide a focus as John (ridethetalk) does in the 7bymany Club thread and Pen and I do for the More or Les thread.

I have attached my stats to provide an initial benchmark but I would expect it to be bettered quickly as you and others get more games up.

I doubt whether this thread will become ongoing, Jack. I certainly wouldn't be interested in ensuring that it does. I appreciate that a group of forumites enjoy challenging each other but it's not for me, which is one reason I don't bother with the More or Les thread. Similarly I never read the 7-by-many thread as I have no interest in knowing which words other people have missed.

I am interested in what others find first and last. In fact I sometimes try and remember the last word I found - as I’ve said before Chi pretty well swirls around my head all day and night! I don’t play the 7 by many (it’s too hard!) but I generally read the thread. I think it helps to improve my word knowledge and as always with Chi, it’s that extra bit to think of like “poetical” not just poet, or “pianola” etc.

Sometimes when I first look at a 7bm puzzle I can't see a single word but I usually find that once I get going the words start to come. I agree it's harder than the other puzzles but it just takes a bit of getting used to. Unless you're adamantly opposed to the idea, Jacki, give it a fair try. You might find that you change your mind.  And it can help improve your word knowledge just like the other puzzles.

Funny you should mention that, Jack. I was wondering what would happen if you failed to find the word and didn't share it to the scoreboard so as not to break your winning streak. Obviously the same would apply.

I'm curious though. In your first post you'd played 20 games but that went down to 11 played. How does that happen? And how has your maximum streak gone down from 20 to 8? Most peculiar.

I'll post the stats as a new benchmark to be broken.

Bad luck, Jack. I'm currently on 16 out of 16 but even if I continue to win every day I won't be able to reach your record as I'm (hopefully) going on holiday at the end of next week. Even if they have the Internet deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon I doubt I'll have the time to play the game, so my streak will be broken.

For anyone who likes Wordle but wishes there was more than one game a day there's this one:

It's exactly the same to play but there are unlimited games.

Excerpts
Quote
The sudden hit Wordle, in which once a day players get six chances to guess a five-letter word, has been acquired by The New York Times Company.

The purchase, announced by The Times on Monday, reflects the growing importance of games, like crosswords and Spelling Bee, in the company’s quest to increase digital subscriptions to 10 million by 2025.

Wordle was acquired from its creator, Josh Wardle, a software engineer in Brooklyn, for a price “in the low seven figures,” The Times said. The company said the game would initially remain free to new and existing players.

Quote
“The Times remains focused on becoming the essential subscription for every English-speaking person seeking to understand and engage with the world,” a company statement said. “New York Times Games are a key part of that strategy.”

Since The Times put up a paywall in 2011, its business strategy has revolved around persuading readers and users, the overwhelming majority of whom get Times content digitally, to buy subscriptions. The traditional newspaper business model is centered on advertising.

The Times sells subscriptions to its print newspaper and core digital news app. For lower prices, it also offers subscriptions to a games app (Games), a recipe app (Cooking) and, as of last year, Wirecutter, a product-recommendation site The Times bought in 2016. This month, The Times spent $550 million to buy the sports news website The Athletic, hailing the 1.2 million subscribers the site brings with it.

The business strategy has been vindicated to the tune of millions of new subscribers.

So, free for now, but one can expect it to go behind their paywall.   :(

It amazes me that Chi does not have more players. It looks to be around the 400 mark, and not all are registered. My missus and I both agree that for the hours of pleasure ( and pain ) and education we get from Chi, we would be happy to pay to keep playing. I guess 400 is just not enough to lure anyone to pull out their cheque book. We have told all our family and friends about it, but few have continued.

Perhaps one day, Chi will go viral, and Alan will get some offers. Until then, we say a very big and heartfelt thank you. Your knowledge, humour and patience are astounding, and your years of hard work are very much appreciated by all.

Couldn’t agree more. If you do want to instigate a subscription fee I would be happy to contribute. Part of my enjoyment lies in the camaraderie of others who appreciate words and I fear this is dying out amongst younger people (I feel old saying that!) however the popularity of Wordle is obviously a sign that I’m wrong again!

Not enough to occupy me I'm afraid. Whereas the Chihuahua puzzles can keep me entertained, or in some cases frustrated, for several hours at a stretch while multitasking between the game and code development :)

Gracias, Stanley. Ecuador, including the Galapagos, was my first exotic birding trip nearly twenty years ago and it remains one of my favourite places. This will be my 4th visit there, although I won't be visiting the Galapagos. I had a negative PCR pre-flight check so it's a go.

Interesting to note that since Wordle has been hosted by the New York Times many players have felt that the puzzle has become more difficult. See this Guardian article (https://www.theguardian.com/media/2022/feb/14/is-wordle-getting-harder-viral-game-tests-players-after-new-york-times-takeover) for example. They claim that target words like CAULK and ULTRA are more obscure than the words in pre-NY Times days. Also that there are more words with repeated letters, like CYNIC and AROMA.

However inquisitive nerds have found that it's possible to inspect the complete computer code and data for Wordle, and that there has been no change since the change of ownership. The target words for several years to come were specified at the beginning.

Incidentally CAULK and ULTRA are both classed as common words in Chihuahua.

For any Wordle players who might be interested I've just discovered another game, Quordle. It works on the same principle as Wordle but you have nine goes to solve four words simultaneously. One game a day like Wordle. Make sure you have your screen in portrait mode so you can see the progress of all four grids.

Maudland and auntiemo (and anyone else who plays it), how are you getting on with Quordle? It's certainly a lot more challenging than Wordle. I'm managing to get all four words about 50% of the time so far whereas I haven't yet failed with Wordle.
Title: Re: Wordle
Post by: blackrockrose on February 26, 2022, 09:30:29 AM
I've played Quordle six times so far, and my hit rate is also 50%.

I succeeded in the latest game, although the last word I found was particularly tough, and I tried it in desperation for my final guess, as the only possible letter combination left, even though it wasn't totally familiar.

I mostly get all 4 but crash out much more often than Wordle - it’s ages since I lost a Wordle. My best result was getting them in 6, which I was very pleased with. It’s much more of a challenge and I think leaps of faith come into it more. But I do love it. And find myself practising a bit too much …

I wondered if there might be a 6-letter Wordle game and came across this site:

https://wordlegame.org/6-letter-words-wordle

Yesterday's word was mantua. I'd have thought that getting a 6-letter word in 6 goes would be difficult enough without using obscure words. The site also lets you play word games of anything between 4 and 11 letters, still only giving you 6 goes.
