Title: selectmen?

The COD defines selectman as 'a member of the local government board of a New England town'

Common?

I did actually manage to play it, but only as a guess,  in desperation, after exhausting all other possibilities!

It may be common in New England, but I can't remember ever seeing it in Olde England.
There we call such people 'councillors'.

I got it as a guess, too, fully expecting it to be rejected. This one seems to have escaped the general rule that words only well known in one or two countries are considered rare in Chi terms.

Yes, selectman and selectmen will be treated as rare in future. Definitely not well known outside the US.

Not well known outside New England! When I first saw the word, I thought it might be an British usage!

Coincidentally, I just finished a science fiction novel today where the local government officials were selectmen.  Not New England, but a planet "far, far away," though not "long, long ago."
