Title: schusses??
Post by: mkenuk on August 27, 2020, 05:43:18 PM
I think for once the statistics don't lie.

Played by 13 from 290. I really don't know by what criterion this can be a common word?

Best of all, the singular / base form (schuss) was played by 18 and was classified 'uncommon'!!

Well I had to look it up to see what it meant. No doubt we will now hear everyone's Uni days stories or previous jobs or obscure publications or dictionaries to justify the word as being so well known.
Needless to say I haven't ever been on a schuss, let alone schusses however at least I have learnt a new word to bandy around at my next dinner party in Thredbo!!

Changing the word but not the subject I am surprised that in the Breakaway game,  my surname Barker was the 5th highest scored word. It scored higher than Baker which is the surname that most people think of when I say my surname.

Ah, yes! I have such fond memories of the Schuss your own Adventure books.

In the 10 billion+ word NOW corpus schusses has 3 hits only. Schuss is used somewhat more often, especially in Canada, but it isn't common by any means.

I'll make schusses rare. Also schussed and schussing, which have been common up till now, but possibly never appeared in a puzzle.

For future reference, schussboomer is also an acceptable rare word.

...but is it (whatever it means!) ever like to appear in a Chi game?
At 12 letters, it's too long for the normal games, and being composed of 8 different letters, it's not going to appear in the '7-by-many'
.
Unless future plans include an '8-by-many'?

I knew it had something to do with skiing, but doubt that I've heard it outside of Winter Olympic events. Rare seems right.

Wouldn't it be an amazing coincidence, if this word popped up again.

Not that I believe in coincidences !!
