Title: Bird names in America and Britain

Lynne Murphy's blog Separated by a Common Language recently had a discussion of the differences between the UK and US in the names of garden birds and bird-related language. It mentions Aussies too. I have to say that parakeet-smuggler doesn't have quite the same ring as budgie-smuggler.  :laugh:

While entertaining this tangential diversion, there's actually a brand of swimwear called "Budgy Smuggler" ...  ;D

In the meantime, I never understood why Americans chose 'parakeet' over 'budgie', given that there are numerous species of parakeet, but only one budgie ...

The people I know who keep them prefer budgie.
